Husband is keeping me awake - Sleep Disorders Message Board

When we are asleep, my husband breathes in but then instead of breathing out he makes this loud noise with is mouth... It is really hard to explain but it kind of sounds like a chainsaw. This noise will keep going on until I poke him and tell him to breathe, then he breathes out deeply. This used to only wake me up a couple times a night, but since allergy season started he wakes me up all the time!

It is so weird because he can be peacefully sleeping, then if I turn over or move the blankets at all he will start up! Does anybody know what this is? We don't know if it's psychological or actually physical. Thanks!

He could have sleep apnea or maybe he just snores. I've been married for 36 years. I spent much of my married life sleeping on the couch because my husband snored so. I love him dearly, but I needed my sleep. Now that the children are gone and we have empty bedrooms, I sleep in my own room, as did my parents and older sisters. He understands. Good Luck!

I suggest you tape record it and play the tape to doc, an overnight sleep study at a sleep lab may be needed

Does he sleep on his back? If so, make him sleep on his side. If he tries and ends up on his back again, there are ways to keep him on his side. A traditional way is to sew a tennis ball into a pocket on the back of a shirt. It couldn't hurt to just see the doctor about it, maybe have sinuses looked at.
