deviated septum surgery and sleep apnea - Sleep Disorders Message Board

i have had sleep apnea for about 4 years now and even though ive had a recent sleep study(nov 03) the cpap doesnt help me much, my ent says i have a deviated septum and it should be fixed, i want to know if anyone who has sleep apnea has had this surgery done and what results have you gotten, basically i want to know if the surgery is worth having and will it eliminate my apnea?

I honestly don't think fixing the deviated septum will eliminate your sleep apnea. If you are having trouble with nasal breathing it could help that and maybe increase cpap tolerance. But I don't see how it will hold your throat open and keep it from closing while you sleep.

well i guess my theory on this would be that since the deviated septum is causing 1 of my airways(nostrils) to be very small and is constricting the air flow from keeping my throat open from the cpap,and if the airways is opened up from the surgery it would allow the air pressure from the cpap or normal breathing to flow correctly. it just seems to me that its like having a garden hose and if you were to squeeze the hose alot less water would be able to pass threw it no matter how high the water pressure is, just my 2 cents
