CPAP adjustment?

I was diagnosed about two years ago with sleep apnea after having a sleep study done. I used a CPAP machine for about 4 months without really becoming comfortable with it. The machine is set at 8. I then lost about 20 lbs and didn't feel like I needed the machine. I have since gained back the weight and have begun using the CPAP machine again on a nightly basis. I have been using it every night for one month and still don't feel rested in the morning. I tend to wake up 2-3 times a night because of the mask moving and getting an air leak. The daytime sleepiness seems to be getting worse. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I could do to improve my sleep?

Re: CPAP adjustment?

It can easily take four months or more to become adjusted to CPAP. And it could take even longer to really see the end results. Have you spoken with your respiratory therapist? They might be able to recommend a more comfortable mask for you. Have you been following good sleep hygiene?

If it has been over two years since you got the machine, and your weight has fluctuated in that time, you should probably schedule an appointment with your doc. Just because that was the right setting for you two years ago, doesn't mean it will be now, even if you are now at the same weight you were then.

I know how difficult it is to get used to the mask. But I would strongly encourage you to stick with it, the results are so worth it. Without exaggeration, I honestly don't think I would still be alive without my machine.

Good luck.
