Can't get the CPAP to work - Sleep Disorders Message Board

Please help. My husband has been diagnosed with upper airway restriction and was outfitted with a CPAP. He is a light sleeper and CANNOT sleep with it on, unless he takes Ambien. When he does sleep, his mouth immediately opens and the air gushes out. He tried the full-face mask, but even with the straps cinched up tightly, air still leaks out which irritates him and keeps him awake. He has given up on it, but I worry about his health as I listen to his irratic breathing. Even with chin straps, air leaks out between his lips. What do we do?

It sounds like maybe he has the wrong size mask. If its too big, you won't get a good seal no matter how much you tighten the straps. And, having the straps too tight will make it more uncomfortable that it needs to be.

Keep working with the respitory therapist at the place where you got the CPAP. They'll find the right fit. Don't let your husband give up on it. This stuff is serious.

I don't know about that nomask thing. Having to stick something in your mouth doesn't sound much more comfortable than the strap mask. I guess I'd have to try it, but at $180 I don't know if I would risk it.
