Zopoclone - Sleep Disorders Message Board

HI All

I was prescribed Zopiclone for sleeping by a locum doctor, who gave me no info apart from they were safe to take. Been taking them now for 3 weeks and my own GP has just told me they are a benzo and highly addictable?

I have googled them and can't find any info on them being a benzo, has any one any info out there?

My doctor told me that the only reason people become addicted to this medication is because they get addicted to the good sleep...not the drug itsself. I have been using it off and on for over 3 years. No problem. I never take a full 7.5 mg., I always break it in half. That's sufficient.

I don't know why you need the medication so if your doctor gives you a specific dose don't break it in half. He is giving you that dose to help you through whatever you need it for.

I also googled this drug and could find no "benzo" info. You might call your pharmacist if you are still uncertain. He would know for sure!

Cheers for that info, I have been on it for 4 weeks, some nights take 7.5mg some nights only half of it, doc said up to 7.5 mg I could take.

Never thought of the pharmacists thanks for that

Zopoclone is actually the generic name for Ambien. Hope that helps.

Zopiclone seems to be ok for short-term use from what I can find online. It shouldn't be taken for any more than 4 weeks, as the body gets used to the medication very quickly. Did your doc suggest anything else you could be given?

It's not a benzodiazapine (I guess that's what the doc was alluding to), it's pharmacological profile is similar. Benzodiazapines include drugs like temazepam, which are addictive if taken regularly every day for more than 4 to 6 weeks.
