I'm sleeping that long now too, I used to only sleep 6 to 8 hours a night. I was recently diagnosed with major depressive disorder and have taken a few weeks off work and now that I don't have to wake up eary in the morning, I DON'T! In a couple of weeks I will have to start getting up at 6:30 am when I go back to work, not at 11:30 am , so what I'm going to do is start setting my alarm 1/2 hr earlier each day. I'm also trying to do something each day to get me going, exercise a bit, walk a mile, shop...
I don't think sleeping 12 hours each night is normal, but right now my therapist says that maybe my body needs it. Have you been doing this for long or has it started fairly recently?
Sorry to be getting back to you so late...I've reread your post. If you don't think meds are causing the problems, you may want to investigate sleeping disorders, including sleep apnea. If you are waking during the night (and one is not always aware of this, I wasn't) you may not be getting quality sleep. Symptoms of this include depression, fatigue, yawning a lot, sleeping alot, acid reflux, and cardiovascular problems. But do some research. You don't want to sleep your life away.
This sounds like my husbands type of sleep apnea.. constantly tired.. and couldn't function with out 12-14 hours of sleep. He has sleep apnea as a result of hyponea events. You should go to a sleep specialist and get a sleep study performed. A CPAP may be able to make a world of difference. My husband functions beautifully on 6-8 hours of sleep now.
