Unhappy cant sleep since operation on thyroid

i wonder if anyone else has sufferd this...
I had a partial thyroidectomy, right side removed in march..... (suspisious lump.. results begnine)... before the op i could sleep for england.. always felt tired lethargic etc , but thyroid funtion tests always came back normal... since the op though i cant sleep... i feel exhausted and so tired i think yes i'll go sleep tonight but when it says 6.30am on the clock and youve got to get up at 8.00am it starts to get annoying... i just cant get comfy in bed ... night wear starts to irratate me.. i am forever turing from one side to the other feel hot... then my scar on my throat starts to itch.... arrrrgggg..
i went to my consultant and he says it cant be from the op and had test done for aneamia and thyroid funtion both came back normal and told me to go to gp... went to gp and she prescribed me stilnoct (Zolpidem)... she said take them every other day or 2 days and soon your brain will kick back into sleep pattern ... its been 3 weeks and i'm still waiting... still have bad nights even some nights when ive had a tablet so i just have more..... any one else experince this .....

Re: cant sleep since operation on thyroid

It would be interesting to compare your pre- and post-op thyroid levels. Although both were - apparently - normal, there may well be a big difference between the two.

You might try some camomile tea before bed. Watch your caffiene intake, especially afternoon. Also, check out the sleep hygiene stickie at the top of the board - tons of good tips there.

Re: cant sleep since operation on thyroid

I too was once one of those people who was always tired. I could sleep for 10 to 12 hours a day easily. Yet one day I all the sudden could not sleep. It's not like I just have a hard time getting to sleep but if allowed to stay home and not go to work I could sleep most of the day. I can't sleep period.

My help and advice from the medical camp has been very poor to say the least. The level of compassion from other people seems nonexistent. They all seem to think they understand what it means to not be able to sleep yet they understand hardly anything. Consequently here I am, dependent on drugs to stay alive and trying to function when I really can't. Most people probably think I'm just stupid. That's what happens when you loose the ability to sleep. It's hard to think at all. Yet I'm expected to perform as if nothing ever happened to me. The doctors see it as far more convenient to write my condition of as a self induced depression. They think I'm just doing it to myself. I guess this fits into their small sphere of understanding better. Maybe they just don't want to admit they don't know? Maybe they just want to make sure I'm not eligible for disability? I don't know the hidden agenda, but one thing is clear. No help seems to be available, and these last 10 years have been quite miserable. I still can't believe I've lived this long with this condition. Hopefully death will come sooner than later if I can't get this fixed in any way. I'm really sick of living with it.
