Question I don't think it's Sleep Apnea, but I need HELP please!!!

Hello everyone, I am new to the Sleep board. I hope everyone is doing well!

Anyway, it's 4:00 AM here in PA, and it's not unusal for me to be up this late. I'm 21, but since I've been 16 I've always had trouble getting tired and even more trouble actually falling asleep. According to people I do not snore, walk, talk, or toss and turn in my sleep, so I don't think sleep apnea is the culprit.

To get sleepy I've tried getting in a routine, calming activites before bed, lavendar scented pillows, OTC sleeping pills (Unisom, Tylenol PM, and even Benedryl), having a cool dark room, exercising during the day, not eating before bed, and the list goes on. Nothing works! When I finally do get to bed, usually around 3-4 AM, it takes me another 45 mins-1 hour to fall asleep. Once asleep I sleep soundly for 5-6hours, and I do have VERY vivid and clear dreams ususally 4-5 nights. However, 3-4 times a month I'vehad these mental images (maybe really light sleep dreams) where I'm going to be hit by something or I'm in a race, or just reacting to something in the "dream" and I JOLT awake! I'm breathing and everything, but it can be bothersome. I'm ususally pretty awake during the day, minus an hour or two in the afternoon.

To make a long story (sorry!!) short, I just need some advice on why I can't get tired or fall asleep, what this jolt is, and why my dreams are so vivid (I don't ususally wake up from them...ususally it's an outside factor such as my alarm)??
Thanks!!!!!!! <---I know that's the sign for embaressement, but I'm making it a yawny face to promote sleep, even in these boards

Re: I don't think it's Sleep Apnea, but I need HELP please!!!

You are describing typical chronic insomnia. Sleep apnea is not the only source of insomnia. While the main source is as a symptom of breathing problems at night like sleep apnea, or of medical illness like heart failure; it is also a side effect of many medications or a symptom of severe anxiety or depression illness.

Other than the sleep medications are you on any other medications?
How about general stress you feel overly anxious or depressed often?

If the answer is no to both of these well you saw the two other sources. Sleep apnea and hypopnea do not require you to snore. You could sleep like the dead and just not breathe well in your sleep lowering blood O2 levels and preventing achievement of restorative sleep (hypopnea) or you could just be having hitchs in your breathing due to an elongated pallet or engorge adnoids/tonsils or your tongue falling back (apnea). The only way to know for sure is to have a sleep study performed.

Many insomniacs with out an underlying condition respond well to what is called "cognitive behavioral therapy" which corrects incorrect ideas about sleep. This therapy involves following the good sleep hygiene post above. So if you are doing that and it is not working you need to go to a sleep speccialist and get evaluated. They will be the ones bet able to get to the root of your issue.

Sincerely,
MG

Re: I don't think it's Sleep Apnea, but I need HELP please!!!

Thank you for your reply!

I do suffer from OCD and anxiety, but I have been on Luvox for 7 years and it hasn't gotten out of control since I've been on the medication. I also did BCT in conjunction with the medication. I still see a therapist once a week just to check in.

I had my tonsils out last summer because of chronic infection and since then I have been much healthier! It's mostly just where sleep is concerned that I'm stuck!

Once I fall asleep I seem to go in to the dream state rather quickly. However, I am a very light sleeper, and people going to the bathroom or moving about will wake me, though there are only 2 other people in the house so it doesn't happen too often.

Maybe I'll talk to my therapist and see if she has anymore insight!

Gavroche,

Having been diagnosed and sucessfully treated for a sleeping disorder, I will tell you that the very worst sleep problems I experienced in my lifetime were due to rx meds, and not my sleeping disorder. Based on my experience, I quickly searched for the side effects of Luvox and found that sleep problems were pretty common for people taking that drug...in fact almost 27 percent of those taking Luvox for OCD had sleep problems.

Please keep in mind that side effects can occur after taking a med for days or for years--so even if you haven't had sleep problems before, it could still be the medication. I'm not a health care professional so all I can do is encourage you to look into the possiblity.

Take care and may you have pleasant dreams!

Re: I don't think it's Sleep Apnea, but I need HELP please!!!

Thank you very much! I never guessed that after all these years it could be the Luvox causing the sleeping problems!!
I'm going to see my doctor next week, so I will ask him about this!

I'll let you know what he says!
Thanks and sweet dreams to you too!

Gavroche,

I would encourage to do as much reading about your meds BEFORE you go to your doctor's appt. My sleep specialist and my primary denied any correlation between my blood pressure med and my restless leg syndrome, but the rls cleared up within days of discoing the med. The 5 months I was on this particular med was the only time I experienced rls, to the best of my knowlege.

I mention this because doctors can't possibly be familiar with all of the side effects...I've had doctors deny symptoms as side effects even though the medication package inserts clearly listed them as being side effects. So educate yourself well, and perhaps print off info you find on luvox and sleeping problems...if you can find info from the drug trials (which I did), your doctor should take notice.

Good luck!

Bethsheba
