Is sleep walking considered a sleep disorder? - Sleep Disorders Message Board

Hi,

I'm not sure if this belongs here, but I am curious if sleep walking is considered a sleep disorder and is it hereditary?

I know I did this well into my teen years. I found my 6 year old doing this last night, only I didn't realize that she was sleeping at the time. When she got up she ended up wetting herself (something she hasn't done in years) so I washed her and helped her put on new pajamas. She woke up this morning and couldn't understand why she was in new pajamas and doesn't remember anything from last night.

Yes. Sleep walking and sleep talking are sleep disorders. The are often the result of a deeper disorder like sleep apnea. My son and I both did this with our sleep apnea inspired sleep deprivation. Treating our sleep apnea treated the sleep walking.

You need to take your child to a sleep specialist right away. Preferably an ABSM sleep specialist.

Thank you very much MG! I will be calling her pediatrician on Tuesday for a referal.
