Re: Why Do I Sleep All the Time

It could be a few things. Hypopnea based sleep apnea or your thyroid. But an elongated cycle alone can not be used as the only gauge. The best thing to do would be to go to an ABSM certified sleep specialist near you, get a physical evaluation and get a full thyroid panel of blood work done. This will narrow it down for you. Overt hyperthyroidism can cause you to sleep all the time.. hypopnea you breathe to shallow in your sleep and never keep high enough oxygen levels to reach all the necessary sleep stages.

sounds to me like your sleep habits might be related to your lifestyle or depression.

It's possible that you may have a circadian sleep disorder (in other words, your internal clock isn't keeping time with the rest of the world)...there are several different kinds.

1. Delayed sleep phase disorder is when you fall asleep very late at night and wake up late the next day.

2. Advanced sleep phase disorder is when you fall asleep early (at supper time for example) and wake up very, very early the next day.

3. Irregular sleep-wake rhythm is where you sleep off and on over the course of 24 hours.

4. Free-running (nonentrained) sleep disorder is when you fall asleep later and later every day.

Sleep specialists sometimes ask patients to keep sleep diaries for several weeks before coming in for an appointment/sleep study. These diaries may show patterns in sleep pointing to a specific circadian rhythm disorder (the diaries also provide the specialists with other info, as well, for the detection and treatment of sleep disorders).

Some diaries are simple, others not so...but you may want to keep one to see if a pattern emerges...if you decide to see a sleep specialist, the information recorded on the diary may be an important component in your treatment.
