I hallucinate every night

I do and always have had vivid, awake hallucinations at night while sleeping.

I have them both while falling asleep and while waking up (more often). usually it is the middle of the night , but quite often I will have them within seconds of dozing off, VERY occasionally in public (class, work), though it is more vivid if I have been asleep a while.

Typically, I will awaken directly to very vivid hallucinations that I don't usually realize aren't real. When I lived in the same room as my brother he used to talk me down from them, but it is very hard to convince me that it isn't real. it isn't hard to convince to me to go back to sleep, which I usually do if I don't get too far from the bed. The next morning I remember the episode fully and can recognize right away that it wasn't real. One time I opened a window, kicked out the screen and dove over our holly bushes without cutting my self before I realized that alien orbs weren't about to demolish my home. I hope the neighbors didn't see me!

These hallucinations almost always include visual and auditory and if I try to touch the hallucination, tactile.

I Also I feel like I "hallucinate belief" and what I mean by that is I will beleive some of the most absurd things are and always have been true. The other night I hallucinated that my roomates anger was a mist the was filling my apartment which I needed to escape or it would hurt me. It was a purple mist and as soon as I saw it I knew it was "anger" and that this was normal, like the fact that peoples anger manifests as a dangerous mist has always been a fact. I got out the front door and onto the landing when I realized that it was dumb and went back inside.

I see people, animals, ghosts, things that are real but are moving or are altered in some other hallucinated way. I can tell you more examples if you like, some of them interesting as hell.

My Mother nags me to get a "sleep study done" I don't even know how to get this, nor have I ever felt like it was a problem. some of my earliest memories are of hallucinating at night as a very very young child, and it has never gotten worse or happened without sleep. I have just always woken up tripping out of my mind at least once a week but most often several times a week or even a night. After 24 years I have gotten quite used to it, and if I do realize its fake before it ends (rare) I will even attempt to control it which works sometimes. Usually I will just taunt whatever it is or tell it to get out and let me sleep, which it usually does.

I am only concerned because I recently read that this is usually linked to other sleep disorders like narcolepsy, I just want to make sure I am healthy! I read that narcoleptics fall asleep during the day, which I do quite often, but only if I am still for a while and bored, this seems normal to me, though the urge to fall aslepp is totaly unfight able and people get angry with me. If I get up and walk around it goes away.

I also read that "People with narcolepsy may dream even when they only fall asleep for a few seconds" as if it was not normal. I do this ALL the time and thought it was normal.

Opinions?

Re: I hallucinate every night

I think your mother is right, you need to get a sleep study done before you accidentally hurt yourself or someone else. A parasomnia like you describe could be related to Narcolepsy, a brain injury or even progress into Parkinson's Disease. This is something you definitely want a doctor to look into.

http://www.ninds.nih.gov/disorders/narcolepsy/detail_narcolepsy.htm

A bit from the above webpage:
"Hallucinations can accompany sleep paralysis or can occur in isolation when people are falling asleep or waking up. Referred to as hypnagogic hallucinations when accompanying sleep onset and as hypnopompic hallucinations when occurring during awakening, these delusional experiences are unusually vivid and frequently frightening. Most often, the content is primarily visual, but any of the other senses can be involved. These hallucinations represent another intrusion of an element of REM sleep-dreaming-into the wakeful state."

Re: I hallucinate every night

That’s sounds pretty bad. I would seek a doctor out or a psychiatrist. I see a psychiatrist for my night terrors and the hallucinations you speak of. He put me on ambien, lamictal and pamelor. It works pretty well. I haven’t had a night terror for a long time and the hallucinations don’t happen so often.
