I have tried everything to sleep - can't shut my brain off!!!

i have been off of work for stress leave (for 3 months now) and i know this is why i am the way i am right now but i never had a problem falling asleep until the last 2 weeks, i do not know how to shut my brain off!!! i think about my job then it goes onto something completely unrelated then another thing then another and they are usually just me reliving memories of my life that have no real significance on whats happening at the moment!!! i will think of one of the kids plays then how i brushed the dog and then think about how much the cat meowed today then how i should really go buy some oranges then how it was weird there was no mail today and so on and so on and so on!! i have tried xanax, sleeping pills, gravol relaxing having sex even!!!!and so on i even got one of those sound machines that plays soothing sounds like oceans and birds and NOTHING shuts my mind off even when i concentrate on not thinking its like the memory of that thought goes in 1 minute then 10 mins later i realize ive done it again!!! i dont nap during the day or drink caffeine after 1, i am dreading quitting my job and have been under stress with it BUT those arent usually the thoughts my mind is thinking about!! they are just random peices of nothingness! i am SO frustrated i dont know what to do! i usually lay awake for 4 hours, when i fall asleep i stay asleep for the most part and usually get 8-9 hrs every night but i dont want to be up until 4 am anymore tossing and turning! i use to be able to fall asleep at 1 am wake up at 10 then nap at 3 for an hour and go to bed by 1 again now i am not taking the naps and feel like i am in a vicious cycle! part of me thinks well its not like i have to get up early so go to bed when i am tired but i dont want to do that...i am usually tired when i go to bed but then i stare at the ceiling for 4 hours! i just am at my wits end!!!

Re: I have tried everything to sleep cant shut my brain off!!!

You may want to read "Change Your Brain, Change Your Life". It has some very interesting info on how the brain works, and how it can actually be changed by the way we think. I saw the author on a PBS special a year or so ago. He's a credible brain specialist.

Re: I have tried everything to sleep cant shut my brain off!!!

My mind used to race with all kinds of thoughts and ideas keeping me awake at night. I would finally fall asleep around 4 or 5AM but had to be up at 7AM. I was a walking corpse. This went on for more than a year. My doctor's solution was Ambien, which was just awful for me. I couldn't function at all while on Ambien. I tried different teas, no caffeine, exercise, you name it. An acquaintance who I consider to be an expert on herbs, natural healing, etc., recommended Kava Kava and Valerian Root. One helps the body relax the other helps the mind relax, sorry I don't remember which is which. In any case, I started taking the 2 and within a few nights, I was falling asleep soon after I got in bed. I only took the herbs as long as the first supply lasted, 30 days, I think. Fortunately, I haven't had the need again.

Re: I have tried everything to sleep - can't shut my brain off!!!

Im no sleep expert BUT there is a medication called "SEROQUEL". It will knock you on your butt! I am supposed to take 200 mgs at night but I only take
100 mgs.. Ask your doctor if it is appropriate for you. It is not a sleeping pill, it is for depression and anxiety but the side effect is extreme drowsiness. I take 100 mgs at bedtime and 1 hour later I am out like a light.
Also, never lay in bed if you cant sleep. Also I read the book mentioned by Jim Bronson. I just finished it 3 days ago. It was a GREAT book. I would highly recommend it.
Good Luck sleeping!!!

Personally, I wouldn't take kava kava due to the suspected health risks. As always, Google is your friend. If you decide to take it, make sure you buy it from a reputable source.

Re: I have tried everything to sleep cant shut my brain off!!!

Have you spoken to your doctor about these issues? Have you by chance tried Melatonin? I have been going to a sleep doctor for the past year after being diagnosed with sleep apnea. I use a cpap machine. He also suggested I take Melatonin which is the store aisles along with natural supplements. Your body normally makes it but as we age our body makes less of it. I think the label says to take one tablet 1/2 hour before you go to bed. Because of my size I take two 3 mg tablets because I'm overweight. It comes in 3 mg and 5 mg tablets. Try it and leave a response back letting me know how it works.
