I hear lots of fellow insomniacs on here suggesting that the next step is to go to a sleep specialist. My recommendation before doing that is to be very careful in selecting a sleep specialist. Here's my experience. The sleep specialist immediately made arrangements for a sleep study and the result was mild sleep apnea. He felt that the apnea was causing the insomnia. However, after CPAP treatment, it was clear that I had 2 separate sleep disorders, that insomnia was not caused by apnea because my insomnia continued. Well, he never delved into what was causing the insomnia, never asked about depression or anxiety....never looked into medical causes. He merely told me to take ambien every night. His interest sems to be only sleep apnea, not insomnia.
