I wonder if there's anyone else here on this forum that has tried all of the things that I have tried and still cannot sleep. I'm beginning to think there's something dreadfully wrong with me. I've had different forms of insomnia for years but in the past year things have gotten completely out of control. I never get even one good night's sleep. I sleep one hour at a time and lie awake for hours until 5:00 a.m. when I just give up and get up. My total sleep is 3 or 4 hours.
These are the OTC meds I have tried: 5HTP, melatonin, L-tryptothan, Valerian Root, TylenolPM, Benadryl (which gave me a bad reaction), and all of the herbs that I cannot remember the name that are supposed to help with sleep.
I have been to a sleep specialist only to learn that they have little or no interest in insomnia. I then went to a sleep therapist, practiced cognitive behavior therapy, sleep restriction therapy. I don't drink caffeine or liquor. I excercise as much as possible in my always fatigued state. I try to get relaxed at bedtime and practice deep breathing exercises. I've tried meditation. which like everything else did nothing for me. If there's anything physically wrong with me, it hasn't been found. I even had my cortisol levels tested and they're normal.
Glenn, Yes I was tested and have sleep apnea. But here's the problem---nothing changes when i use the CPAP except that my insomnia worsened.
I still wake up every hour with the CPAP and take hours to fall back asleep. It's much harder for me to get to sleep at all. It's been determined that sleep apnea doesn't have anything to do with the insomnia. They're just two separate sleep disorders in my case.
Have you had your thyroid levels checked? Hyperthyroidism can cause significant insomnia and fatigue. It is a simple blood test. Even if it was checked before, I would get it checked again since your symptoms have been worse the past year. I also have had reasonable results with GABA OTC and Inositol, 500 mg each, OTC, if your thryoid isn't a problem. Take both 1 hr before bedtime.
Dont know if this would help you but for the past ten days I have been taking "Manuka Honey" (for Arthritis).
My sleeping had become really disturbed but now I find myself getting 6-8 hrs sleep per night (am on NO medication).
Some say its very good in hot milk before bed.
Just thought this might help you and all the best,
I appreciate the responses. Yes, I have had my thyroid checked just recently and it was normal. I'll try the other things suggested. At this point, I'm willing to try anything and everything that may help me sleep normally. I know everyone here understands what it's like to not sleep and I so appreciate the advice.
