Sleep quality vs. quantity?

First, let's define OK sleep quality as the level of quality sleep the average american gets. Then, let's define GOOD sleep quality as sleep that's significantly better than that.

Which is more important? Sleep quality or sleep quality? Is it preferable to have 6 hours of GOOD quality sleep or 7 hours of OK quality sleep?

Re: Sleep quality vs. quantity?

There's a curve there, and I wouldn't know how to answer that in any kind of definitive way. But in your example, the clear answer is 6 quality hours is better than 7 so-so hours. What makes it difficult is that the less quality there is in the sleep (i.e., getting the needed amounts of the necessary sleep cycles), the more it affects all areas of your life: concentration, energy, pain, etc. fwiw.

Re: Sleep quality vs. quantity?

So, if I were to start getting 6 good quality hours of sleep a night, I'd be better off than the average american? What're your points based on, btw?

I have no idea. I don't know what you get now, and I don't know what the "average American" gets. I do know after many years of sleep issues for various reasons that 10 hours of poor quality sleep is almost useless compared to quality sleep where you actually transition through the sleep cycles normally.

Re: Sleep quality vs. quantity?

Is there variation in sleep quality even when you're transitioning through the sleep cycles normally? For example, if you've got two people who BOTH got the exact same amount of each sleep cycle on a particular night, is it possible for one of those two people to have slept better than the other?

Re: Sleep quality vs. quantity?

Not to my knowledge, but I don't know. I would think it would be the same, all things being equal (i.e., one person is not catching up on sleep because of some prior deficit). My understanding is that the normal transition through the sleep cycles is the definition of good sleep.
