Apnea when fall asleep sitting up

Whenever I fall asleep in an upright position (car, plane, chair) I always have an apneic episode, where I suddenly wake up gasping for air. I don't ever have problems when I'm laying down (that I know of).

Has this ever happened to anyone? Should I be concerned?
