Sleep Issues for 20+ Years...please help!

I am at my wits end...all my adult life, I have not been able to sleep like a normal person and I have chronic fatigue...not surprising. I have been to numerous doctors and specialists, have had a total of 4 sleep studies, and no one has been able to pinpoint why I cannot sleep.

I thought it was caffeine. I abused caffeine since I was in my late teens. I gave it up permanently two months ago...is it too soon to tell if this has been the culprit?

Even when I exercise and eat well, I still have the feeling of brain fog throughout the day and never wake feeling refreshed. I've given up sugar, refined foods, even wheat products hoping that might help but nothing.

I've had an adrenal test, taken vitamin cocktails, other natural supplements, and nothing helps.

I've been on trazodone to sleep for 20 years and over the last 5 nights, I've tried to see if I can sleep without it and I pretty much fall asleep for 20 minutes wake up, toss and turn, and repeat.

The first of the year when I can afford it better, I'm going to a Naturopath doctor in hopes she can look at this from a different perspective as I've tried just about everything.

Does anyone else have this issue and if so, what has helped?

p.s. it's possible that I'm mildly depressed but I think I am because I'm so tired all the time!

You do not have to necessarily cut out caffeine completely , usually I try to avoid it about 4-6 hours before I plan on going to sleep. There are other alternatives than taking sleeping tablets, it can be small things that make a big difference, for example one thing that seemed to help me was spraying lavender oil on my pillow, which is something else you can try. I also invested in a new mattress which has also been a big help. Hopefully these things will be of some use to you!

Where did you get your sleep studies at? I too had sleep issues for the longest time. I had 2 sleep studies done at 2 different accredited sleep clinics. They showed nothing but mild snoring. I finally went to the famous Stanford Sleep Disorders Clinic in Redwood City, CA. They test for UARS (upper airway resistance syndrome) which causes chronic fatigue, sleep problems. They have the best testing equipment and score respiratory events more aggressively. I suggest you give them a try.
