I read your message. I developed post partum thyroiditis two months after my son was born. It is a form of silent thyroidtis. You first enter a phase of hyperthyroidism for a few weeks or for a few months and then enter the phase of hypothyroidism again for a few weeks to a few months. I am in the hypithyroid phase. I dont know which phase is worse. In the hyper thyroid phase I had MANY symptoms. Headaches, heat intolerance and INSOMNIA and many others. I could not sleep or fall asleep. My ob told me I was depressed when I went to her with my symptoms. I fired her and I went to a new doctor who I told if he said I was suffereing from depression I would fire him also. In a nutshell he ran blood work and it revealed hyperthyroidism. I was then reffered to a endocrinologist. He is seeing me through my treatment. He gave me three months of sleeping medicaiton that did help. I am in the hypothyroid phase. I am still having serious sleep disturbances. I am up 48 hours now without sleep. My family keeps begging me to tell my family doctor about the insomnia. I am in fear that he will tell me I have depression because of my last doctor. I think antidepressants are appropriate for those who need them. I feel most times they are often over prescribed and there to cover up. I am calling my doctor to tell him after I write this note. If he tells me I am depressed, he to will be fired and I will get another doctor who will figure out what is wrong. I can tell you that if you let the insomnia go too long it can make it worse creating a larger problem. Most doctors seem to have a hard problem having their patients tell them they are wrong and when their patients are educated. (I am a registered nurse but work as a pharmaceutical representative.) I remember one of my doctors nurses, after she took my vital signs she left the room to tell the doctor I was in the exam room. I heard her say....By the way she is a RN. I felt that that doctor was already put off. If you are in the medical field you will understand what I mean.
