Anyone had Somnoplasty for Sleep Apnea? - Sleep Disorders Message Board

Hi everyone,

I was wondering if anyone here has had somnoplasty for
sleep apnea? I am thinking about having it done and
want to know if anyone has had good results. I have
been reading other boards they seem to think it helps
some especially if you don't have severe apnea. Also
I here you have a really bad soar throat for weeks.

I have sleep apnea and have found 2 different suggestions to me by my doctors. Firsr of all I had surgery for cancer of the naal cavity and as a result had all muscus membrains etc removed now my Internal Medicine dr. said that sleep apnea is worse for someone like me because of the surgeries I would have more muscle collapsing but my ENT dr says no it should be easier for you because I have a much wider passage there so I am not sure who is right one thing I do know is that weight is crucial for sleep apnea people (weight loss that is)

I am slightly overweight ie 10 lbs but when I loose those 10 pounds I sleep better also people with sleep apena tend to gain weight but I am not sure why.

This is my first post here, so I hope I do this right... Should you have somnoplasty? Do some research on the web, and be sure to pay attention to the side-effects, etc., that are listed for the procedure. My brother-in-law had the procedure a few years ago, and it did not work for him; after a few weeks or months, he began to snore loudly again. I don't know about what he went through surgically or in terms of recovery, but two years ago my 20-ish son had a tonsillectomy/uvulectomy (?). Anyway, they took out lots of tissue, because we had informed the doctor of his occasional sleep apnea, etc. It was 2-21/2 weeks of sheer agony for him, and we were afraid he would become addicted to the pain medication. He was in such pain! Good luck in making your decision...

I had the somnoplasty done in late 1998, I was down at out for more then two weeks.
In late 1999 I was told I had a brain tumor that needed to be removed, I can honestly say that I experienced much less pain with the removal of the brain tumor then the somnoplasty. Every time I would swallow it would just about kill me! there is nothing like a diet of ice cream, popcicles and liquid motrin for 2 weeks.
