Exclamation sleep paralysis - im scared,

hi, im new to this message board but id really apreciate it if you could help me.
for the past 7 months i have been experiencing what i now know to be sleep paralysis. it started of quite mild and lasted maybe 2 or 3 seconds. Last night however it was absolutely petrifying. it lasted about 2 minutes and i was so upset by the whole experience that i broke down. after calming down, i managed to try to get to asleep, but again it happened.
Please, if any one has any info/advice on how i can control this let me know. im now concerned about going to sleep in case it happens again.

many thanks
marsius

Hi marsius,

I've had this happen to me many times. The first time was 1976 and it happened at least 20 times since.

I always related it to "someone" haunting me. Too real for me. It only happened when I was laying on my left side. I would feel myself waking up, and then a buzzing would start in my right ear. It would then feel like electricity going through my body and the strong presence of "someone" behind me.

Once, in 1979, my husband had just left for work. I was on my left side, and heard his footsteps coming toward the bed. I was wondering why he was home, I assumed he had not really left.

I then started to get that buzzing...I got really scared. Then I felt something pulling on me to turn over and whispering my name over and over. Scary!! I knew it wasn't my husband, and starting to recite the Lord's Prayer. The buzzing started to diminish, the pulling stopped and then I was fully awake. I didn't turn around for a long while. I was totally freaked!!

I found out later that in all the houses it happened in -- someone had died. In that particular house, where I felt like I was being pulled on... someone had committed suicide.
When we moved and were looking for a house, I refused to buy one where someone had died.

The one we're in..I've never had the buzzing feeling, but I have sometimes awakened to a red glow in my hallway. Did I dream it? I don't know....I just say,'Go away!" and then go back to sleep.

I'm not a religious person. I believe in spirit things, lots of things I've experienced, but exactly what, I can't explain.

I've never done any deep research on it, I don't really care about it. I did discuss it with my psychologist and he said it was severe stress. Could have been, I suppose....but it was real to me!

So, tonight I did some research. It seems that the parts of the brain that control the body movements and brain consciousness while asleep don't wake up at the same time. It makes sense.

I found a site that explains things in medical sense, but also in cultural beliefs -- with people's experiences and symptoms they are having during sleep parylasis.

I hope I haven't freaked you out.

I would suggest you to be as unafraid about it since your conscious mind is "awake" at that time.
It's like dreaming while being awake. Part of the body is still in paralysis.

If you are comfortable, say a prayer.
If you are more brave, deal with it and experience it in an unafraid way. Within a few seconds, you'll be awake and fully in control of your movements. Fears elicite many scary uncontrolled thoughts.

You could also write down your dream, analyse it and get a more introspective sense of why you're dreaming what you are.

Make it a project, not something to fear. It may just go away.

I hope you have peaceful sleeps,
quincy

I've had this before also. The only way I can wake up is to move my toes. Weird I know, but it does work for me.

Hi drs,

I'll remember to try that the next time it happens.

Thanks,

if this happens frequently AND you are always sleepy during the day consider a sleep study. It could be related to narcolepsy. My sleep doc says you don't have to have daytime sleep attacks or cataplexy to have narco.
