Apnea Surgery--help! - Sleep Disorders Message Board

Hey there everyone! I have had sleep apnea since I was a teenager. None of the doctors or specialists that I go to seem to know much about this. I am still falling asleep at my desk and have even gone off of the road while driving at night even while using my CPAP machine at night. BTW, I absolutely love my machine--it puts me to sleep quickly. Lots of time to get used to it but I live by it. My ENT suggested that I get this surgery where they pull your jaw forward? Anyone familiar with this? I have already had my tonsils, adnoids and had my uvuela cut out. They also carved the inside of my nose and the back of my throat to make me stop snoring. I have had this problem since high school. My dad has it too and cannot get any answers--they always tell him to lose weight. I understand that weight can contribute to snoring and sleep apnea but I told my Dad to see my Dr although he lives more than two hours away. I also am on a CPAP machine, for the last 2 weeks. i am getting used to it and like it more each day. A friend at work had the surgery because he just could not tolerate the cpap machine. He said the surgery was horrible, required a very long recovery time, but it was his only choice. Ask your doctor for more details.
