Day 1

Finally going to get this monkey off of my back. Today is Day 1. I am 48, and have tried to quit lots of times before, but am taking a new approach this time. I had a recent scare over what they thought might be cancer at the base of my tongue. I lost my Dad three years ago to lung cancer, so the time to wake up is now.

Can't do patches or gum, so I am going cold turkey so that I only go through withdrawal once. Using a lot of online resources, relaxation, etc. to help, so look forward to posting here regularly.

Jeff,

I've found what helped me was to write down all the different reasons why you want to quit smoking. Keep this list with you all the time. When you start to feel like saying, "the heck with this" pull out your list that was written back when you had sane thoughts to remind yourself as a nicotine deprived mind will tell you some wild justifications. Always keep these reasons burned into the front part of your mind as well. This is very important. Speaking from my own personal experiences, but if I did not have all the reasons "there in front of me" it would have been so easy to succumb to the urges and temptations. Prayer works wonders too.

Jeff,
Can you or would you use Zyban? This stuff works great for me. I am almost too relaxed on this stuff. Just a suggestion if going cold turkey doesn't work for you. I have been smoke free for 3 days now. So I am pretty new to the game too. I am using Zyban and the patches. So far, I don't feel nothing from the patches. I am tempted to go a day without it, just to see what happens. But I figured I should at least get through the 3 days before attempting that. We'll see. Keep us posted on how your doing.

Hi Jeff!

Congrats for trying it cold turkery. You are not alone. I am trying to quit cold turkey myself simply because I take so many meds, that I don't want to take another one, if I can do it by myself. It won't be easy though. You'll hate the people who brag about "sailing" right through it, but you're right. Once we get through the withdrawals, we won't have to do it again!

By the way, I'm on my 4th day and did pretty well until this evening. I wanted one so badly I screamed.... then I felt a little better. I paced the floor, but, I held on and now I am over that one!

Good luck to you all that are going cold turkey. I recently quit cold turkey myself, I tried the patch first. The patch made me more nervous and made my heart race. I've not smoked for a month now and all the physical cravings are gone...not so for the mental habit. I have been working out every day to keep my mind off of it. It has helped quite a bit. I know if I don't stay busy I will pick up another cig. My advice is hang in there and stay busy. Its a tough fight that I'm still fighting but we must remember that it can be done. We don't need our lives ruled by a little object like a cigarette or any kind of tobacco.
