Is the coughing normal

One of the reasons I quit was because of a bad cough. Two weeks after I quit the cough went away, now four weeks later I wake up coughing.
In the morning my mouth is full of junk and dark in color.
Is this my lungs cleaning themselves out?

Re: Is the coughing normal

Hi Jpsnj:

I was told that coughing is definitely a nicotine withdrawal symptom and that mucus accompanying the cough was normal. However, I am not sure about the timeline. I guess it depends on how long and how much you smoked. I am sure that you're ok and it is most definitely your lungs cleaning themselves out. But if you're not sure and are concerned you may want to consult your doctor, I know that a lot of people do and they get chest exams. CONGRATS on your wise decision!

Re: Is the coughing normal

Probably the cough you notice is a result of the cilia in your lungs becoming functional again. Your smoking paralyzed them with smoke and tar. The function of the cilia is like little brushes that trap and "sweep" the dirt out of your lungs - in a healthy nonsmoker who doesn't cough this process isn't even noticed. In a smoker the cough serves the function of getting the gunk out of there.

Don't suppress the cough. It is serving a useful purpose. But as the previous poster suggested, if you are anxious about it, you certainly can't go wrong consulting your physician who will no doubt be delighted that you aren't smoking any more!
