I am starting Zyban tomorrow

Hi Everyone-
Its my first time in this forum, and I thought i would stop by because I am starting Zyban tomorrow morning. I have used it in the past and it was wonderful...but the only trouble I had with it was not being able to drink. Now please don't get me wrong, I am not a booze hound by any means, but I am 23 years old, I smoke a pack to a pack and a half a day, and during the summer months, my friends and I usually have barbeques and parties and everyone is always drinking, and it was really difficult. At least now that the weather is colder, there aren't so many social functions to attend, and I am thinking that it might be easier to not be tempted to go out into the cold for a cigarette. So, I am thinking of setting a quit date sometime next week. We will see how it goes.

Has anyone had any experience with weight loss while using zyban? It is listed as a side effect, but the last time I took it- I didn't see any pounds coming off.

good luck to everyone- quitting is the best decision we could ever make!

Janine

Re: I am starting Zyban tomorrow

Hey-
Congrats on deciding to quit. I didn't use Zyban, but I had friends that did. Zyban is also known as "wellbutrin" which treats depression, etc. I've had some friends who didn't like how Zyban made them feel, but I also have friends who have quit sucessfully using it. It is so much harder to resist a cig when drinking. I quit over a year ago and still crave them like crazy when I'm drinking and everyone around is smoking. I had to quit drinking and going out for 3 months in order to quit smoking. A small price to pay for the fantastic way I feel now. Good luck to you..

Re: I am starting Zyban tomorrow

I tried Zyban a couple of years ago and immediately broke out with hives - huge welts all over my mid-section. I actually had to go to the emergency room to get relief from the extreme itching and pain. And I was looking forward to using the Zyban to help me overcome my smoking habit!

It actually took me until just recently to give up smoking again. And I can report that it has been going on two weeks now with no problem to speak of. I used the 4 mg. Committ lozenges, taking just three or four per day for the first four or five days. Then I reduced the number down to two or three for a couple of days, then just one per day...and now none at all. I have no desire whatsoever to have a cigaratte. Quite amazing. I can only attribute the ease I have experienced to the Committ lozenges.

Good luck to you!

Re: I am starting Zyban tomorrow

Hi! I personally wouldn't recommend antidepressants to quit smoking, based on my own experience. I quit with them one time...for 8 months, but I started having suicidal thoughts after taking them and I became this different person like I was addicted to the antidepressants...it wasnt fun. I just stopped taking them and everything went back to normal. I quit smoking cold turkey (which wasnt easy, but highly effective!!) I've had some friends that had similar experiences with them as well. Just sharing experience

Re: I am starting Zyban tomorrow

Hi there,
I just wanted to say that I am approaching my 1 year anniverary for not smoking. I too used Zyban and I could not have done it without it. The important thing to remember is, stick to your plan. You have to have a quit date, if I remember correctly my quit date was 2 1/2 weeks after I started taking Zyban. When I started Zyban I still smoked regularly for the first couple of days. Then I started to really cut back without even noticing it. I did also push myself to hold back and wait an hour longer to have a smoke. By the end of the 2 1/2 weeks I was smoking maybe 1-2 cigs a day. It was not much of a problem for me to stop on my quit day at all. Sure, it gets tough when you have a bad day but it's really not all that bad. I tried quitting several times before and nothing worked for me. I totally recommend Zyban, it chaned my life and I feel so much better . But I can't stress enough...don't fall off track, don't miss your pills and take it for the full term!
Like you I am 23 and I have to say, I enjoy my drinking. I was a bit worried that I wouldn't be able to go out because not only couldn't I smoke but I couldn't drink either!! But I drank anyways and had no problems what so ever. I have a few friends that used Zyban as well and still drank while on Zyban and they had no problems. I think you just have to take it a bit easy. Well, I wish you all the best in the world. GOOD LUCK!!! If you have any questions just ask. Take care. Kristy
