First day using the patch

HI
I have never posted on this thread before, just the Addiction and recovery board...well, I had huge help there and have been clean from my addiction for about a month and have no urge to go back to that.

anyway, now I need to tackle the smoking.
I put a patch on today, and it hasnt really been bad at all.
I just keep telling myself that a cigg. isnt gonna solve any
problems that I might have.
And how bad it is of course for my health.
I have 3 great kids and a great hubby, and even though
he hates the smoking he still has been supportive.

I quit for 5 years before, then about a year and a half ago I started again
(closet smoker).

When I didnt smoke, I HATED the thought of smoking and rarely thought about it. All it took was one puff one night, and bingo, right back at it at about a pack a day, sneaking around.

I dont want to do it anymore!!!!!!!!!!!
I am going to stick with the patches. does anyone have any bright ideas for me?
thanks

Re: First day using the patch

Welcome Julie--
Welcome to the smoking board!
Congratulations on getting your other addiction under control, that's wonderful! That is really scarey to me when I read stories like yours, when one quits for so many years, and then suffers a relapse! But it does teach me that we are all so vulnerable to relapsing ourselves. Guess we should never get too cocky, or relaxed into thinking that we have this problem licked. It's like the saying goes, "you're only one drag away from a pack a day". Just keep in mind that you were successful in quitting before, so you can and WILL do it again.

Yes, the patches work VERY well. I quit first with the gum, and then went to the patches. I really found the patches to work better, (for me anyway) than the gum. Probably because it keeps a more steady level of nicotene in your bloodstream, than the other aides. (gum, lozenges). Make sure that you remove your patch at night, as they are known to give people nightmares or very vivid dream that may disturb your sleep.

Keep yourself busy, and your mind occupied. Learn some relaxation techniques, whether deep breathing, yoga, meditating, etc. Draw up a list of all the reasons that you want to quit...sounds like you have some good ones already,,,your husband and kids. Come to this board any time you feel you need to vent, ask questions, etc.

Best of luck to you!
Deda

Re: First day using the patch

HI
How long has it been since you quit smoking?
I went to the store tonight and bought some sugarfree candy to suck on.
Its nice to hear that the patches worked for you.
That gives me hope.
Anyway I will let you know how I do tomorrow. hehe

Re: First day using the patch

Hi Julie--

14 months, 6 days, 9 1/2 hours now.

Hard candies are good to use at first. I also liked bubblegum. Another gal that used to come here liked Fireballs. I just had one of those, (given to me by my manicurist) and they are really good!

Yes,let us know how you're doing...

Re: First day using the patch

HI Deda
Wow thats a long time! You even count the hours? wow! neat.
How much were you smoking a day? Me, it was getting way out of hand
up to over a pack a day.
Woke up this morning and put another patch on. I took it off last night cause I didnt want to have any strange dreams, but I had a few anyway. haha
My other addiction was pain pills---up to over 20+ a day.

I am planning on staying busy( hopefully)if I can force myself to.
There is plenty of cleaning to do around the house and starting to decorate
for Christmas.
Plus I have a 5 year old girl who keeps me busy.Plus I babysit.
I will read the Bible, Psalms, a little throught the day.
There are always going to be problems coming up, and I just tell myself a cigg. is not going to take any problems away. Plus right now the thought of smoking makes me sick so that is a good sign, right?
It is just such a bad addictive habit. YUCK
thanks for your support.
