Quit for 5 days, a few questions...

Ahhh I finally quit. I've been smoking since I was 16 and am now 19 (20 in October). I'm reading up on some of these symptoms and the only one I've really had is headache and even that's not all bad. I haven't been irritable at all in fact quite cheerful. I've even been generally less fatigued. And of course I've been able to jog more than usual.

I sometimes get cravings but to satisfy that I have a big bag of dum dums and they work really well.

I chose my day to be the day that I moved into my new house at college. It's stressful but it's definately more exciting than anything.

Do you think my withdrawel isn't as bad because I've only been smoking for 3 years? Does it get worse?

How do I prevent weight gain? My first year of college I lost about 15 pounds and I'm at 130 for my 5 foot 6 figure. I'm at a very good place in my weight and I don't want to gain those 15 pounds back. People tell me the weight gain comes from replacing cigarettes with food which is something I don't do. If anything since I moved up here I've been eating better when it comes to snacks such as rice cakes and dried fruit. Are there any other suggestions?

Thanks.

Saraw,

I remember you from a wile ago!!! My goodness I am so happy and excited for you!!!

Congratulations and keep it up! I don’t think you have a thing to worry about friend. You may have not been smoking long enough as you say. I also think that with the increased jogging and exercise there shouldn’t be any weight gain. You don’t seem to have any problems as you said with over eating replacing smoking right? As you see your energy levels are increasing quickly and that will also help you keep it off.

Keep it up and keep us posted!!! What a GREAT ACCOMPLISHMENT!!!

Sincerely
John

Re: Quit for 5 days, a few questions...

Way to go, Sara! Congratulations to you! You are doing great, and have got the right attitude going for you.

I agree with John, I don't think you'll have a real problem with your weight, as you are pretty active physically to counter act the slower metabolism. I quit almost 23 months ago, and I did gain about 13 lbs, (but I also was battling thyroid problems). I have now lost 8 lbs, and I know I'll get back down to my pre smoking weight. See, I'm 50, and I had quit many, many times over the 30 + years that I smoked, and I went back to smoking too many times, as I wanted to always be slender and looking good. But when you start getting older, you realize, hey, either do it or die! I chose life/health, but wish I had just stopped for good when I was young, like you. Health is more important than one extra pant size!! You can always lose it later girlfriend! But I think as long as you increase your exercise, you will be okay. And NO, I did not just gain weight from quitting smoking alone, I DID gain weight from eating more, and more bad foods.
Best of luck, and keep it up!
hugs...
Deda

Re: Quit for 5 days, a few questions...

I have heard that the first 72 hours are the worst. That is the length of time for the nicotine to leave your system. You are doing very well, the worst is probably over.

You now just need to leave it alone for good, no relapsing!

best of luck.
