A lot of people today do not breathe properly. Smokers and ex smokers are notorious for this. They breathe in what is called "Shallow breathing". This can hold in the stress that we feel, especially when we first quit smoking. Also a lot of people tend to hold their breathe when under a lot of stress, thus tensing their muscles even more.
The power of practicing deep breathing can not be understated. It is a great exercise to do when we first quit and are hit with a crave.
