How to help someone quit?

My mom has been a smoker for about 30 years now and recently we have lost a very close friend to cancer, and another family member has been diagnosed with lung cancer. I love my mom and I really want her to be around for as long as possible. I try telling her to quit but as we all know its not that easy. She had quit for about a year, 3 years ago and started up again because most of her friends are also smokers as well as my dad. Is there anything I can say to her that might help her out or anything I can do?

Re: How to help someone quit?

I would say exactly what you wrote here. But when it comes down to it the person has to want it more than anything to quit. It took my DR diagnosing my son with asthma (Even though I NEVER smoked in the house) My fear of his having an asthma attack scared the crap out of me enough to quit.

Just tell Mom how scared you are about losing her and the thought of a painful unpleasant end is even worse. Hope for the best and be supportive if she fails a few times.

I am not sure how to get into one of these. Tomorrow is going to be my first day smoke free. I am doing Chantix and I noticed where a lot of people say they are tired but I am like wired. If I did not take a Xanex at night I probably would not be sleeping at all. Plus I get anxiety attacks really bad.
Anyone out there that has the same symtoms???
