I quit 6 years ago and used the patch and it worked. I used it much longer than necessary because I felt like it was my security blanket.
I never liked the gum, when I tried it many years ago, it tasted horrible, was very hard and would give me sore jaws so I can't comment on the gum.
Maybe try the patch and regular sugarfree gum? Come to think of it, I still chew about 3 or 4 pieces of sugarfree cinnamon gum a day.
I really love being smokefree and am so glad I quit - this is coming from a 2 pack a day smoker who thought she'd never quit.
