Question Quitting Smoking/Dieting

I'm looking for stories of people who may have taken on both weight loss and quitting smoking at the same time and were successful in doing so.. or unsuccessful.. I've been hit with this wave of major motivation lately and have decided just to go for an all around improvement of myself and the way I feel about myself and these two issues are something I need to take care of. Now this isn't an extremely major deal.. only about 10 pounds to lose and I smoke less than a pack of cigarettes a day, but still not easy I know because just the weight loss Ive managed so far has been difficult.. So just wondering.. if anyone thinks it is taking on too much at one time.. like too many body changes happening at once so it would not be a good idea? or just restricting myself entirely too much at once? I guess the only way to really know is to try but just wondering if i should expect to go absolutely nuts while trying to do this...

This may sound a little crazy, but a friend ate a few large red grapes (with seeds) several times a day. She would freeze them, suck on them, then chew the seeds. The seeds are full of grape seed extract which is very helpful, very nutritious. She got the idea off a message board, and was ready to try anything at that point. She not only quit smoking within days, but she dropped a dress size.

One day 11 years ago, I had a chest cold, and the idea of smoking that day was repugnant. Somehow, I never smoked another cigarette. I must have been ready. My husband still smokes, and just plain wants to. Everybody is different.

Thumbs up

First of all, GREAT idea those grapes. Gonna try that I smoked for 34 years & i too loved it. But a few DR. visits convinsed me I should quit. I surely didn't want to love smoking to death. I have an extra 22 lbs on my frame that I'm not used to but, I was soooo thin b-4 I quit I looked anorexic. Maybe I was. I ate a sandwich per day,,, maybe,,, if I remembered to eat at all,,, but I would smoke like a chimney. It's been 7 months quit july 1. Hard? Yes!! Worth it?? ABSOLUTELY

I have been quit since Jan 2, 2002 and I gained probably close to 20 lbs. Part of it was I started exercising a lot and training for a half marathon, but also because I rewarded myself every chance I could with food. It was probably the first 3 months that I ate like crazy: Big Mac Combo supersized and a filet o fish. It was pretty bad, but I didn't become overly concerned about it. I have always been underweight, and now I actually have some curves. Quitting smoking is very hard, and the thought of gaining weight is often enough to keep many smoking. However, the weight I didn't gain has leveled off and I feel great. I still want to smoke, and often, but I just keep saying no. Good luck to you all.

Unhappy

Hi! I quit cold turkey March 02. I did not put on any weight, in fact I lost weight! Somehow I ate more while I was smoking because I did not feel I was in control of my body. Now I know what's good for my body and what's not. It is not easy sometimes, my demons come to taunt me but.....that's life isn't it?
I like to freeze peeled bananas (I stress "peeled" because try peeling a frozen banana! It's enough to get me smoking again LOL) I prefer them to grapes because they are "creamier"
