advice, please!!!!!! - Smoking Cessation Message Board

I want to quit so badly! I smoke a pack a day. I find myself trying to quit just about everyday. When I try, I do it in the morning when I wake up so that way I've already gone about 7 hours without one. Is this a bad time since maybe my body could want one even more. I tried the patch, it didn't work for me. I smoked with it on and got sick but it still didn't deter me. Has anyone tried the gum? Sometimes I can make it until about noon until I cave in and smoke. I've tried to wait one more hour and then again another hour but I go crazy and eventually smoke. The only time I don't smoke is when I'm in the car with my kids. It's just a rule I have set and refuse to break. How come I can't have that mind set any other time? Maybe I should go on a cross country trip with my kids in the car then I could quit. Then again I'd probably be stopping at every truck stop to smoke. I try snacking to keep my hands busy but the thought is still there and it never goes away. Does anyone have any advice for me? I think you really need to get into the right frame of mind to quit for good. I quit cold turkey 5 months ago. I smoked my last cigarette at around 10:00 p.m., then invited my husband into the bathroom for a "cigarette flushing ceremony". I flushed the remaining pack of cigarettes down the toilet that night and never looked back. I went to bed knowing that the next day I was going to be a non-smoker.

Don't allow yourself to have doubts. The reason many of us aren't able to quit is because we FEAR being non-smokers. We're not sure how we'll make it through life knowing that we'll never have another cigarette. In order to succeed, we need to LOOK FORWARD and celebrate being non-smokers. If you're able to change your attitude it will be so much easier to quit for good. I wish you the best of luck!

I used a combination of the patch and an anti depressant. It worked for me. One day I slapped on the patch, after taking the AD for about 3 weeks, and low and behold! I still sometimes can't beleive it! It has been 7 months, and I am begining to HATE others smoke, and the smell.
