Unhappy Teen trying to quit

Hey everyone,
I am looking for any tips or advice you might have
in planning for my quit. I am 19 years old and I have
been smoking for about 5 years now. I smoke about a
pack a day and I am desperate to quit. I am constantly
sick with everything from persistent coughs, strep
throat, bronchial infections, and athma, all of which
are directly caused by or exacerbated by my filthy
habit. I tried to quit about a year ago, made it 2
weeks cold turkey, then gradually started again. It
is not only the physical addiction, but the mental
and social aspects as well. Smoking seems to have
become part of who I am. I smoke especially when I
write, which is often, when I talk on the phone,
after I eat, etc. It just feels unnatural not to have
that stress relieving, albeit toxic, release. Also,
all of my friends/family members smoke which is a big
problem. Not only to they contribute to my
temptation, but I am afraid to be excluded from
the "smoker's circle"-when everyone goes outside of a
building, restaurant, etc. and talks and smokes. I am
finding it especially hard to quit now, with so much
change going on in my life. However, this habit is
greatly reducing my quality of life. I get chest
pains, get short of breath, can't run, etc..and I am
19! I can only imagine what condition I will be in if
I keep this up for another 10 years...or even another
10 months. Well, if you have gotten this far, thanks
for reading, and any response/advice is appreciated.
Thanks!
Liz

Talking

Hi, Liz. I hope and pray you will be able to summon up the stremgth to stay quit. The same family members you now feel excluded from, will one day possibly suffering from various lung/heart problems. That will be one group you will be happy to be excluded from! Also, your symptoms are scary. Do you know that you younger you start smoking, the more damage you do to your lungs? I have read many times, that people who start smoking before they turn 18, are more suseptable to dying an early death from cigarette smoking. It has something to do with young people's lungs developing: how cigarettes intereferes with the normal growth process. You started smoking so young. You have got to give up the cigarettes. I know, its hard. But having good health is precious. You can't change anything another person decides to do. My own family smoked very heavily also. I know that contributed to my own smoking habit. But ultimately, we are responsible for ourselves. I watched my father die from lung cancer. It's a horrendous habit; cigarette smoking. The longer you stay quit, the easier it'll get. People are remarkable: they adjust to what is in their envirement. You will one day not even miss cigarettes. You'll be ablt to talk on the phone; whatever you used to do with cigarettes, you CAN do without them. It just takes some time to get used to the change. Many people can't stay quit long enough to make it to that point. But you CAN do it, Liz. You can have all the interaction with your family you want: you don't need cigarettes to be close to them. Who knows: maybe if you can be a sucessful quitter, you will inspire other family members to quit also, eventually. Plus, your symptoms, and the fact that you started smoking at such a young age, is a serious matter. You can reverse the damage done to your lungs, if you want to bad enough. I hope you can stay quit. Nothing in life that is worthwhile is easy. And this is SO worthwhile, Liz. Its the best gift you can give yourself....Take care...Debbie

it's not hard to quit smoking. Like you said, just stop cold turkey, that's usually the best approach...then throw away your cigs, don't buy anymore and don't bum a drag off of anyone. If you can do those really really easy things - you've stopped! It worked for me, i just said, nope...not gonna do it anymore and stopped. It wasn't hard, and i've never wanted to do it again.

We are in the same boat. I am also 19 years old and trying hard to quit. I have friends who smoke, work in a place where people are smoking including co-workers which make it even harer for me to quit when I see them smoke. I smoke a lot when I am stressed which is a lot of times because of some family problems I have. My mom tells me to quit yet she is the one who smokes herself. I am also always sick. I am constantly getting colds and such and also have asthma. I tried cold turkey and throwing the packs away but every time I see a friend or someone light up, I am back at it. I definitly know what you are going through.
