Teen trying to quit
Hey everyone,
I am looking for any tips or advice you might have
in planning for my quit. I am 19 years old and I have
been smoking for about 5 years now. I smoke about a
pack a day and I am desperate to quit. I am constantly
sick with everything from persistent coughs, strep
throat, bronchial infections, and athma, all of which
are directly caused by or exacerbated by my filthy
habit. I tried to quit about a year ago, made it 2
weeks cold turkey, then gradually started again. It
is not only the physical addiction, but the mental
and social aspects as well. Smoking seems to have
become part of who I am. I smoke especially when I
write, which is often, when I talk on the phone,
after I eat, etc. It just feels unnatural not to have
that stress relieving, albeit toxic, release. Also,
all of my friends/family members smoke which is a big
problem. Not only to they contribute to my
temptation, but I am afraid to be excluded from
the "smoker's circle"-when everyone goes outside of a
building, restaurant, etc. and talks and smokes. I am
finding it especially hard to quit now, with so much
change going on in my life. However, this habit is
greatly reducing my quality of life. I get chest
pains, get short of breath, can't run, etc..and I am
19! I can only imagine what condition I will be in if
I keep this up for another 10 years...or even another
10 months. Well, if you have gotten this far, thanks
for reading, and any response/advice is appreciated.
Thanks!
Liz
