Question What is up with my shoulders?

I wonder if any of you can relate to this. I wont mention my problems history for now or this post will get really long. Anyway I have been having these wierd shoulder pains for about 4 months now. They are off and on but they occur daily. The pain runs along a thin line from my spine at about T4 to the top of the shoulder blade. it then occurs on the shoulder blade and down it. The pain is mainly on the shoulder blade and it feels like a sharp muscle tear or strain. it also occurs right on the side of T4. It is mainly on the left side but is also occasionally felt on the right. They usually hurt at about the same time. The thin muscle i described is gets tight and i have been treating it with a tennis ball to work the knots out. It feels like a serious problem and i am afraid to work out with it. Ive gone to many doctors each with a different diagnosis. Starting from first to latest. 1. muscle strain 2. pinched nerve 3. Not pinched nerve. Myofascial pain syndrome 4. scoliosis 5. x-ray shows no scoliosis. muscle strain.
I have also considered things such as herniated disk because i cant stop looking things up and i have a vivid imagination. I can mistake food posioning for an ulcer. Anyway my problem occurs mostly when waking up. I cant make any sudden movements when i wake up or it starts up. I need a firm bed and i must sleep on my less painful side and i need to use the fetal position. The bottom of my bed in my dorm is basically a metal hamock. I sink right in. I had to use books to support it from underneath and for some reason that helps. How pathetic is that! Anyway i guess if it works. The pain is sharp but there is no tingling. it isnt strong but it is annoying. I dont have pain any where else except occasionally in my chest when i bend over really far and then lean back up. It is weak and it lasts about a second. Certain other shoulder and back movements have the same effect. I will say that it started with 2 muscle injurys spaced out about 1 and 1/2 years. it was much smaller problem the first time but changed after bench press injury the second time 4 months ago. Too many possibilities but i cant get anyone to figure it out. im afraid it is a spine problem but nothing showed up on the x-ray. Any one with any answers or recomendations? Im getting fat and i want to work out again. Im just too confused. I guess i just looked into it too much.

Re: What is up with my shoulders?

I would suggest seeing another doctor and asking for an MRI. I too had undiagnosed pain for over a year in my shoulder blades. Kind of a burning pain mostly on the right but sometimes slight pain on the left. Turns out I have herniated and bulging disks in my neck. Shoulder pain can be a sign of disk herniation.

Re: What is up with my shoulders?

Hmm. Was your problem limited to your shoulders? When i got my neck and mid back x-rays my doctor said that there is usually some arm and neck pain too. I don't have any of that nor does it hurt to move my neck around or have any effect on the level of shoulder pain. Well i guess that is why they call it refered pain. I guess in a few months i will know with my specialist appointment. Thanks for the tip.

Re: What is up with my shoulders?

I agree with getting an MRI done...I too had only x-rays for the 3 months of my injury and pain. It showed nothing...slight strain. Had a MRI and I have C5-6 extracted disc with 9mm of cord compression. And NEED surgery.
Please go to a specialist, orthopedic surgeon or neurosurgeon that deals with the neck/back issues. If they don't find anything, at least you have started from the most serious and now can work you way backwards.
Until you are satisfied with a diagnosis....kepp asking questions and more opinions.
Good Luck!

Re: What is up with my shoulders?

Maybe you could get some kind of bedboard/sheet of plywood for under your mattress. My kids' bunkbeds had NO support so we cut plywood to fit.
