Question Connection between scoliosis and neurological symptoms??

Hi. This is my first post on this board. I usually post in other forums but was wondering if the fact I have had scolliosis for the past 15 years has anything to do with my neurological symptoms. My right shoulder blade is slightly higher than my left and is only noticable by the funny way my shirt hands. What is the treatment for scolliosis, by the way?
Okay....here are my symptoms (wax and wane for past 8 months) and are any of these related to scolliosis? Muscle twitching, muscle weakness, tingling, pins and needles, stabbing pains, tremors, headaches, burning sensation, muscle stiffness and tinnitis. I've ruled out lupus, RA, thyroid disease, diabetes and vitamin difficenties. I feel a lot of my symptoms are typical of MS, but had a normal brain MRI and nerve conduction results in Feb. Can scolliosis cause any of these problems, and if it can, what test need to be done to verify it? Thanks for answering as I am getting quite desperate to find out what is wrong with me.

Re: Connection between scoliosis and neurological symptoms??

Hi There, I dont know how much help i can offer but first of all, depending on the degree of curvature you have you could have surgery to have a metal rod placed in your back to correct the curvature and make you straight. Hasnt a doc talked to you about that? As far as the rest of your symptoms, where are they at? My son has scoliosis, however, he is severely handicapped so he isnt able to tell me how he feels or what hurts. I have herniated discs and pinched nerves so i do know how that feels and the symptoms. Post where exactly you are feeling these symptoms at.

Hurdy

Re: Connection between scoliosis and neurological symptoms??

Hey Hurdy.....Thanks for getting back to me. I'm sorry to hear about your son. It must be a rather difficult situation. I have a daughter and I've often thought what is worse, for me to be the one who is afflicted with a disease or to watch someone I love struggle though it? I know, it's a bizzare thing to think about in the first place but as a parent, I truly empathize with you.
Anyway, I'm 28 and I've had scoliosis for the last 15 years but like I mentioned, it's an ever so slight curvature that the only way I can tell is that my shirt hangs uneven on my shoulders. The surgery you mentioned sounds terrible! That is the only way to treat scoliosis?? They put a metal rod in your back? That sounds super invasive! Has your son received the operation? How old is he? I really don't think my scoliosis is linked to my symptoms, but I thought I would just ask and see because who knows.
My symptoms occur mostly on my left side, my dominant side affect but usually overtime end up on my right. My lower legs and feet are mostly affected. The weakness is in my legs and this is equally distributed on both sides. The twitching occurs in my legs, feet, arms, shoulders and buttocks. The tremors are in my hands, the burning sensations occur all over, back, feet, legs, arms, head, you name it......My lower legs are stiff but strechting for the most part relieves this, joint pain in toes and hips. My symptoms come and go and disappeared for about 6 weeks and returned more violently and this is why I think I have MS but so far, no clinical evidence has showed up and deep down, I feel it's just a matter of time. I read somewhere the other day that someone with scoliosis had muscle pain and weakness and felt weird sensations so I thought I would just post here to find out any possibilities. Thanks again......Kristine

Hi Kristine, About scoliosis..... when the curvature is mild, the pt. can be fitted with what they call a scoliosis jacket. How they fit you for it is they cast you (just like the casting they put on you if you break a bone) and when the casting is hard they cut it off and they use that to get a perfect fit for the jacket. The jacket is hard and it keeps you in the correct anatomical position to prevent further curvature. Some people say that if you wear the jacket faithfully you may get some correction of your scoliosis, however, a doc wont tell you that because they say once you are curved you stay curved unless of course you under go the surgery to correct it. Yes, the surgery to correct it with the steel rod is very invasive and can be dangerous. However, for some people the surgery is necessary and without it can also be life or death situation just due to the fact that when the curvature gets so bad internal organs can then be effected, especially the lungs. The curvature can get so bad that it will literaly squish your lung down to the point that the air capacity in it is next to nothing. In some cases with the scoliosis that bad and without the surgery the patient will have trouble breathing and then end up on a ventilator and then eventually die from the secondary complications of the scoliosis. My son has not had the surgery as of yet, however, my friends handicapped son has. His scoliosis was so bad that he was suffering from the pain as well as having the respiratory problems and was on the verge of needing a vent. He was around 12 when he had the surgery. His disability is so bad that it was a miracle he made it through surgery. He is as straight as an arrow now!!! My son is going to be 8 in July. I suspect within the next few years he too will need the surgery. As far as your symptoms, they kind of have me stumped. However the pain, tingling and burning sound a bit like a neuropathy. Have you been to your docs and explained everything? Do you have diabetes? Talk to you soon, and hope to hear from you soon, Good Luck, Hurdy
