The doctor said I'm progressing as he expected, and wants me to start PT now - 3x/week for six weeks - then see him again. He is still severely limiting my activities, but said I can take the soft collar off when I'm at home if I'm not having a lot of pain. I still need to wear it in the car.
I had to ride 2-1/2 hours to the doctor's office (and back) and the trip was incredibly rough. I was in tears on the way back, from all the pain. Most of the trip was interstate but even so, all the bumps and starts and stops really took their toll.
So, about my scar.....I was thinking it looked pretty good for 6 weeks. Well, the doctor touched it briefly and said, "This doesn't happen often, but your incision is attaching to the underlying muscle."
About half of the incision does seem to be kind of "stuck," and the other half moves freely, i.e., the skin moves independently of the muscle underneath. He told me to start rubbing in Vitamin E oil twice a day, and he demonstrated (on himself) rubbing pretty roughly side to side and circularly. So, okay, I can do that.
Well, we got home, DH got me the Vit. E oil and I rubbed it in. Wow, that is not a pleasant feeling! And I got to thinking....is the whole point of all this to actually DETACH the scar tissue from the underlying muscle???? And how painful is it supposed to be?
Has anyone else had this happen? And what did you do? I'm a little scared to rub too hard, but if I need to detach the scar from the muscle underneath, maybe the best way is to do it quickly - like taking off a bandaid??? And then what happens - if it tears away, will it bleed underneath? Bruise? How will I know if/when it detaches?
Thanks for any help/comments/advice.
