How long can numbness/tingling persist before permanent damage occurs!

Hi,
I have posted in this forum before. My diagnosis is C5-C6 herniation. I have numbness/tingling in right arm into right thumb. Right thumb stays numb all the time (for 2 weeks now). My pain level is tolerable, but the numbness/tingling is my biggest concern. I also have some weakness in my right wrist according to my ortho doc.

How long can one let this numbness/tingling go on before permanent damage occurs? I have heard anywhere from 6 weeks to 12 weeks. Does anyone know or have any experience with this.

Thanks,
Debbie

I have similar symptoms but they're intermittent. I'm scheduled for an EMG this week to ensure there hasn't been any permanent nerve damage. I suspect you'd want to ask your neurologist to perform an EMG.

I think it may make a difference with how compressed the nerve is? From what I have been reading, you start with pain, numb/tingly... then onto just numb (as in, oh was that my foot that hit the coffee table?) Different body part, but I went 4+ months with a right leg that I literally had to drag around, and it came all the way back.
