anyone have a C2 & C3 FUSION

I have been diagnosed with 2 large bone spurs on my C2 & C3 vertebrae. I have tried everything for the pain including physical therapy, acupuncture, spinal blocks chiropractors and all kinds of pain killers, Does anyone have any idea how long the recovery might be and/or the success rate of this fusion? My doc says about 6-8 weeks and about a 90% success rate. Want to hear from others

Question Re: anyone have a C2 & C3 FUSION

racersue ~

Has your surgeon talked to you about your ROM with fusing C2-3?????? Why does he want to do a fusion when bone spurs are the problem?

I am fused from C3-7 both anterior and posterior at this time. I have problems at C1-3 and C7-T1 but at this point I will wait it out before surgery on these levels because once C1-2 is fused I wouldn't be able to nod my head up and down and with C2-3 fused I wouldn't be able to turn my head side to side. The levels I have fused now has changes my ROM by about 50%. I will explain more about that if you want to hear. I won't bore you with it now.

I am very happy I had C3-7 done because I feel much better now. Not pain free but a heck of a lot better. What symptoms are you having?

Re: anyone have a C2 & C3 FUSION

my surgeon has said that my ROM is going to be limited but it is now. I asked why he couldnt just remove the bone spurs but he said he cant because when he takes the bone spurs out there will be how he described as rough sandy edges and that can also cause pain.

my symptoms started 8 years ago with pain in my neck then numbness in hands and feet. The tests didnt show a bone spur at that time The pain is mostly in my neck but radiates into my shoulder

i appreciate any help you can offer

Good morning! Thank you for clearing that up for me. I know just what you mean about having no ROM before surgery and what surgery will do to your ROM.

I had similar symptoms as you have plus big trouble breathing when I turned my head to the left and headaches from H***! I still get some headaches and this could be coming from C1-3 which I don't have fused yet. I knew these two remaining levels where bad before my last surgery which was the posterior fusion from C3-7. My NS really took his time talking with at least 4 other Neurosurgeons from all over including Curtis Dickman from AZ. My NS wanted to make sure he was doing the right thing or the best way to help me. I am sure you have found out already there are not many who have problems this high up or very much information on the net about these levels either. When I was looking and still look there isn't much.

My NS want to spare C1-3 for as long as I can still function without fusing them. So far not to bad other them a much smaller headache problem then before C3-7 was done and that I can deal with for the time being. He also said that he would go in transoral (through the mouth) when and if he has to do C1-3. My NS was really worried when talking about my last fusion that once it was done and the hopes it helped that I would complain about my ROM. I was told he did surgery on other patients who later complained about their ROM. Well, the way I look at it is just like you said "I didn't have much before mainly because it was so painful and now there is little pain but the ROM is hindered because of the hardware. I have a plate and screws (anterior) and rods and screws (posterior).

If there is any thing you want to ask or talk about please let me know.

Re: anyone have a C2 & C3 FUSION

you are so right I cant seem to find out much info about C2 &C3 fusion. You had said that one of your surgeries was posterior right? That is how my doc is going to operate on this also. How did you feel when you work up and how was your recovery?

Sue ~

Yes, my last surgery was posterior and it was done almost a year ago this Sept. I almost a 6 inch scar but that is because it was from C3-7. It was a very painful recovery at first and like with all my other surgeries I wondered if I would every feel better and guess what I did!

When I woke up I couldn't lift either one of my arms but by the time I went home I could. The reason for that was because of the muscles they had to work around and thru to get at my spine. I believe if I remember right I was in the hospital for 3 or 4 days. When PT came in I know I wasn't willing to work with them because I hurt so much. I couldn't even scoot myself up in the bed.

Re: anyone have a C2 & C3 FUSION

Thanks again for all of your info on this surgery I know it will be a tough recovery from what the doc said too but I can only pray that it will eliminate some of my pain

I am only 47 years old with 2 kids in college so I am anxious to get back to work and get on with my life

Hi again Sue ~

I am 42 Y/O and 2 kids in High school. One is starting 9th and the other is ending 12th. I know what you mean about getting back to a close to normal life again. I had to retire from my job so now I am back to wondering what I am going to do when I grow up? lol

It will be hard to find since I loved being an EMT/FF and now can't do much lifting because of having both cervical and lumbar problems and surgeries.

I would love to keep in touch with you.
