Pinched nerve

Hello,
Was told a couple of days ago by a chiropractor I had pinched nerves in my upper back near my neck. I forgot to ask him... What exactly causes a nerve to get pinched? Can this be the reason I've been super dizzy/off balance lately? and could this cause my neck pain (he said my neck felt fine) thanks

Re: Pinched nerve

an actual nerve 'pinch" is usually the result of some sort of muscle spasm that turns into kind of a trigger point for pain if it is not 'worked out" during some sort of therepy like just simple deep neck massage. The big thing though would be to try and find the reason that this muscle spasmed in the first place. It could just be stress or the way you hold your body while just sitting at a PC all day.or it could involve some sort of nerve issues going on inside the column, like bone spurs or a herniation that is constantly irritating a nerve, which in turn, would trigger a spasm in the upper back or neck muscles.I would try some PT that involves deep upper back massage. They will help you to loosen up that area and hopefully 'unpinch' that nerve.if that doesn't seem to help, then the next step would be to get a good look at the c spine with an MRI.hopefully your issues can just be resolved by finding a good therepist.Just ask your doc about trying PT.good luck,Marcia

Re: Pinched nerve

Physical therapy. I would stongly recomend you get a MRI of the cervical region. I had a heniated disc and went through PT. PT actually made the herniation move from the left side to the right side. I just think you should know whats going on in there before you start doing things that could possibly make it worse. I'm not saying PT isn't good but they do need to know what exactly is wrong so they can focus on exercises that could help and if it is only inflamation they can start you on meds that might help calm that down. I would also hold off on chiropractic care for awhile till you get a MRI so he doesn't make things worse. When I was finally diagnosed(thought it was my shoulder) my chiro wouldn't even touch me.

Re: Pinched nerve

So if it is a herniated disc there is something they can do about that?

Re: Pinched nerve

Yes there is. I had to have surgery for mine. I went through all the conservative methods and none of them worked, well not completely. I actually have 2 herniated discs. One of them is getting better on its own. The other was pressing against my spinal cord and causing me problems. You could google herniated disc. There is alot of info out there.

Re: Pinched nerve

Ok thanks... Also does anyone know if a pinched nerve in the upper back can cause me to be dizzy and off balance? Im starting to worry I have MS or something. Ive had bloodwork and have been examined by a ENT specialist neither showed anything wrong. I know the shoulder that the pinched nerve is on is very sore the side of my neck the pinched nerve is on is sore and the arm on the side where the pinched nerve is often goes cold/ tingles. If anyone could tell me if it could be why im dizzy or not that would be great thanks

Re: Pinched nerve

It is indeed possible if the actual problem is in your lower c spine or upper T spine areas.their are a couple of nerves that come down from the head and then loop back up into the head again. The junction,in most people(this can vary some from person to person)is right around the c 8 nerve(you do not actually have a c 8 vertebrae but you do have a c 8 nerve that lies right between the c 7 and T 1 vertebraes)i have alot of facial nerve involvement that is the direct cause of damage to some of the crainial nerves in the c 8 area of my cord.i really would reccomend getting that MRI done so you know whther or not this is related to anty sort of spinal issues or just muscular in nature. In most cases, when you have any sort of upper back or neck muscle problems the cause is actually stemming from the c spine area.irritated nerves will in turn cause the affected muscles to go into spasm just from the irritation.this really should be further evaluated if it is really negatively affecting your daily quality of life in any way.An MRI would really tell you alot.Marcia
