I had a stiff neck one day an had an uncontolable urge to move my neck with a slow right twist, only slightly and heard a cracking sound.
Now if I turn my head to the left and hold for at least 10 sec, it cracks moving it back. Also upon waking up in the morning there is a loud crack sound right at the base of my skull and during the night if I turn or move my neck a loud cracking wakes me up!
Did I do permanent damage? What did I do and will this ever go away?
I really don't know if joint cracking does any harm or not but have heard it does not. For me, I feel like pressure builds up in my joints and my mind thinks i have to crack them to get some relief, however the relief only lasts a few seconds. Every joint in my body seems to crack, though..and for many of them I do not even purposefully do it...I just move naturally and hear the crackin'. In my neck and shoulders lately I have been getting severe muscle spasms (at least I think that's what it is) and I feel like I have to crack my neck to the left and to the right. But when I do to the right, it won't really crack but gives me some undescribable painful sensation. Instead of a quick crack sound, it's more like a quieter, slower sound as if stepping on leaves or something.
Is it only the cracking sound you have? Or do you also now have pain in your neck/spine areas?
I'm not sure if you have a history of neck pain and/or neck surgery. But any abnormal pain or symptom that occurs frequently and is bothersome would lead me to reccomend seeing your physician. Usually the first step, if you are not already being treated, is an xray. After that, and if needed, your physican may reccomend an MRI and possible referral to a neurosurgeon or orthopedic spine surgeon.
It cracks moving it around as well and when on the pillow. There is no pain though, but for 4 months prior to this I had a lot of pressure on the base of my skull with neck stiffeness.
After the cracking its the same as before but now cracks!
