For people that had bone graft from their hip - Spinal Cord Disorders Message Board

I would be interested in hearing from people that had a double or a single disc fusion and had the bone harvested from their hip, rather than donor bone used. Can you tell what to expect as far as the whole deal? (pain, recuperation, and anything else you would care to share). Thanks, I really appreciate it and HAPPY THANKSGIVING

I am going to have mine done on Nov 29th..2 possibly 3 disks. The doc said that they dont use bone from other people anymore it will be my own as well. They will be putting it into a plastic disks.

So I am curious as well on this issue.

When do you go??

I've had donor bone and have had bone grafted from my hip. The donor bone wouldn't fuse and caused the first fusion to fail. The graft from my hip for the revision surgery fused fine. As far as discomfort from the harvest site. To be honest, I barely noticed that anything had been done. It just wasn't that much of an issue. My opinion is that your own bone is better. Monty

I dont have a surgery date yet. My surgeon appt. is Dec. 19th. so I am probably looking at a 2 month wait from now, till my surgery.

I've heard of others having alot of trouble with it, but I've had my hip bone used 3 times with minimal pain. It does have a higher rate of fusion, but not by a wide margin.
