Pre-Surgery Flexion/Extension X Rays?

I have to go to the hospital in the AM to have my pre-surgery tests -- EKG, Blood, etc No worries -- when I turned 50 last year, my MD took great relish in ordering every scan and invasive procedure known to medical science. Heart Scan, Body Scan, Lung Scan, Colonoscopy, you name it!

Anyway, I am having Flexion/Extension X Rays tomorrow. What can these show that MRI doesn't? I though MRI was the gold standard. I understand that things may look a little different when the neck is flexed or extended, but why X-Ray and not do the same thing in MRI?

Thanks for all the support. Fighting a little cold -- swollen glands, etc. Probably stress!

Jeff

I also had the pre-op flexion/extension Xrays. I have heard that they show if you have instability (whatever that means). When I had them, they made me hold a filled up gallon of liquid in both hands, to make my shoulders go down. Man, that was not feeling too good.

I dare them to find anything that will make my shoulders go down! My shoulders normally ride about 3 inches above my ears.

Ohiogolfer,
So you're a turtle neck? LOL. I sympathize if you have to flex, extend, etc. You will probably be aching a little after that. I didn't have to do anything like that. I wonder if it is because of your diagnoses.

Re: Pre-Surgery Flexion/Extension X Rays?

I just had a flex/ext x-ray along with a MRI for my lumbar - which Ill be having surgically repaired next Friday, the 9th.

Anyways, the ordered x-ray, at least in my ccase- was to determine if the bones overlaped during the flex and ext motions. A MRI will not show this as you are still, plus MRI's are of great use for tissues more so then bones. My neuro told me it was to be sure they were still 'secure', and moved as they should.

I hope that made sense......Good luck...
