I had this once after a cruise I was on.. it is awful... can you take seasickness meds?? that worked for me.. I took them after the cruise... not during because I kept feeling those waves while I was on dry land.. at least you could ask the doc... they are available OTC but check first with doc! I feel so bad for you... I have had a queasy stomach the last couple of weeks I thought it was from pain meds but now I have stopped and I still get it...also could be from not sleeping well...?? but it isn't bad and it does help me not to eat as much... good luck ,bdancer
Sorry you are having such a bad time. I am a little more than 4 weeks out and I noticed that just this week I am starting to feel discouraged, like I am always going to have spasms and have to limit my activites. I think mine is from PMS (oy), and also I had to be driven 50 mins. each way to the sinus Dr. and I paid a price for just sitting in the car. So I feel like, everything I do besides sit around, I pay a price for, later. I know our mental state has alot to do with healing. I am FORCING myself to get those thoughts out of my mind when they enter in. I had vertigo, too...after getting off a cruise ship. I did that sea sick patch on the ship. When I got off, forget it, I would dizzy for a minimum of 6 weeks. The next cruise, I didnt use the patch and I was fine. Definitely ask your Dr. if you can take something for the vertigo. That is ridiculous that you would have to suffer thru that. They have meds for that! Oh yea, they also have something that I wore on that second cruise that totally worked for me and my husband. Those accupressure bracelets. Maybe you could try one of those. I think I got mine at Walgreens. Your body only knows it has vertigo....it doesnt know why or how....so maybe that would help.
I did not know vertigo was a side affect.....could it be from drugs? I could not take most of the drugs post surgery due to vertigo or "linda Blair" like nausea. And the antispasm drugs made me goofy and I had double vision. You may want to try slowly chewing candied ginger....trust me this stuff works helps intense seasickness within minutes. Healthfood stores and regular grocery stores have it in baking aisle.
This is a major trauma to the body! Actually, lets face it. A key part of the entire system. Remember we were not built to walk upright!
Today, I am 6 days shy of 4 months. I have walked 5.2 miles! I know tomorrow I will be in a little pain. So, I will slow down a bit. Do little things around the house. I will take a tramadol if I hurt.
If I had done this a month ago. I would be in bed for 2 or 3 days!
Take it easy! Don't be hard on yourselves, because you had a traumatic physical experience.
Its gonna take time, and lots of patience.
I am two years after my most recent ACDF - and the key is to keep that positive mental attitude. (You are right - some days it's 'easier said than done')
I experienced vertigo after my first ACDF, and finally sought the help of an Ear, Nose, & Throat specialist. After some tests to confirm the vertigo, I had a procedure called a CRT (Canalith Repositioning Techniqe). Canaliths are little particles found in the inner ear bones and are part of how we maintain balance. The ENT Dr explained that sometimes the canaliths can get out of their intended location, perhaps due to the way the head is positioned during surgery. The CRT procedure is a simple office thing, to get the canaliths back where they belong. I experienced prompt relief from the vertigo symptons.
The other medical specialty that can perform this technique that I know of are Audiologists.
There are also loss of balance symptoms that can be related to the loss of movement in the vertebrae that are being fused - the spine has many nerves that provide information to the brain about position and movement, and to maintain balance. Now that some of these signals are different from the fused levels, it takes the brain some time to relearn.
In any case, if the vertigo is becoming a problem, it is something you should mention to your Dr., and get checked out - in my case, it was relatively easy to correct with the CRT procedure.
thank you all so much for the suggestions.........I did not anticipate this vertigo......I've been dizzy before in my life but nothing ever compared to this......I was prescribed meclizine (sp)..sounds like that....I will try the ginger stuff also.......Bob aren't those canaliths like "marbles" , we really do have something like marbles in our heads that roll around, I just don't know what they are called.......My nuero is moving my 1st appt up to this coming week as my left leg is numb now.....thou they think it is a circulation problem.
Someone else mentioned this on here .....I have always bounced right back after any type of surgery or illness ,,,,,,,this is a very different type of recovery......I had my little pity party today......BUT THAT IS OVER.......I accepted the feelings, allowed them to happen and then told myself what I tell everyone.....WHAT YOU FOCUS ON EXPANDS.......SO I WILL FOCUS ON THE POSTIVE OUT COME OF THIS SURGERY......My arms and hands are no longer numb and no pain like I had prior to surgery.......Just those dang ol tight muscles in my shoulders.......I found out my youngest daughter is expecting her first baby in Sept..... So I will focus on a new baby quilt..........
THANK YOU EVERYONE FOR THE LIFT TODAY......I AM THANKFUL FOR THIS BOARD .......WHO ELSE CAN YOU TALK TO WHO HAS BEEN THERE, DONE THAT......DO THIS. THANKS ALL - & TO THOSE OF YOU HAVING BAD DAYS, I TRULY HAVE BEEN SAYING PRAYERS FOR EVERYONE ON THIS BOARD.......TOMORROW IS ANOTHER DAY........
