All of our DR's what they say to help promote fusing?

Since we are all treated differently with collars, I thought it would be educational to find out how else we are different. And is there any kind of consensus post op of what our Doctors suggest?

Walking....did your Dr say it helped or not.

Vitamins and supplements What did your surgeon say? Any effect on fusing.

Pain meds for spasms ...what works for you?

Nerve pain and tingling again what works what doesnt.

Physical therapy if no why not and if yes for how long

Any other questions I forgot!

I've read some instructions that say no non-steroidal anti-inflamatories and no green tea or herbal teas from two weeks before the surgery.

Re: All of our DR's what they say to help promote fusing?

1. Walking seems to be "universal" with all of us. My doc said the same..a mile a day, broken down if need be.

2. No nsaids.. didn't say anything about herbal tea...good thing I drink black tea, lots of ice water with a straw to help with swelling.. ice packs on neck and hip.

3. Didn't really stress muscle relaxers.. I had to ask for them.

4. PT at 8 weeks after last check up.

5. Calcium 1000-1500 mg a day.

6. Aspen two weeks, soft collar 2 weeks continuous then 2 weeks weaning..6 weeks collar free except for driving

7. Driving.. very limited (10mins or less) at four weeks-8 weeks

Re: All of our DR's what they say to help promote fusing?

My Doc is Mr. Minimal Info. Drives me nuts. Thank God the 2 Phys. Assts. are informative.

I was told (by written instruction out of the hospital....to walk a mile a day). Didnt say how long, how fast....or anything.

My surgeon said before my surgery, that I wouldnt need P.T. (yea right). I took that with a grain of salt. I just started last week (at 6 1/2 wks)...P.T...because the Phys. Asst (at my 6 weeks post op) felt my upper body and said I was almost the tightest she has ever felt a person. (lovely)

I didnt wear a collar (C5-C7)

Wasnt told to take any supplements. Just no NSAIDS. (anti-inflammatories)

I had no driving restrictions, if you can believe that one. I have to drive alot now, due to the 2x per week. P.T. that is 20 miles away (each way). OYYYYYY

Re: All of our DR's what they say to help promote fusing?

My Nuero said.......
1. Hard collar 3 months, now after 1 month I can wear a soft collar to bed.
2. No nsaids, no green tea, no herbal supplements,,,,,,,,,,,,1200mg calcium
and a multi- vitamin
3. Just released to drive short distance at 4 weeks.
4. My doc did not take xrays at post op, and I don't have to come back to him , I follow up with my primary care doc.
5. Weight resriction after surgery and for 2 more months 5-8 lbs. No lifting
6. No physical therapy, I am not paralyzed he said,,,,,,,do streches but not with neck
7. Muscle relaxers were automatically RXed after surgery and I have 3 refills, doc said the spasms come with the journey - recovery
8. I was never told anything about walking any certain length, just told I could walk........no set amount to do. Had restrictions on stairs for first 2 weeks because of the hip bone graft.........
9. I was told fusion would take 4-6 months and could take up to a year..

It is all different....Different doctors, different post op instructions, different levels of recovery......Bottom line is -WE HOPE WE ALL HEAL PERFECT......
