OH NO...now they've added a corpectomy

to my scheduled surgery. After my myelogram and CT scan was done I now need a corpectomy or posterior discectomy and fusion because there is a large spur compressing my spinal cord. So on top of the discectomy and fusions they are going to do this too. Does anyone out there know what to expect with this type of surgery? I won't be able to discuss it with my surgeon until next Wednesday.

I just had a corpectomy Oct 18 and know that if I didn't have one I would have been completely paralyzed on my right side as my cord was so severly compressed. I had no idea. Before that they thought I had MS as I have Lupuas and I felt as though I was burning up inside and was about 500 degrees on the inside and then started going numb on my whole right side. The pictures showed everything. and the pictures did not lie.

Re: OH NO...now they've added a corpectomy

It is all kind of the same surgery, but with a discectomy and fusion they are removing the disc and fusing, by adding the corpectomy, they will take out a little of the vertabrae bone along with the disc. Your recovery will be the same as if you only have the discectomy. Your incision might need to be a little longer. You might have a little more post surgical pain from the extra drilling.

corpectomy

Hello dwallech... Just looking at the post and came upon yours. A question if you don't mind... I too had a 4 level ACDF and corpectomy with cage and they used my own bone from the neck. Did you have LEG PROBLEMS?? This is where all my problems are taken place. My left leg is heavy, numb, and the toes at times are pins and needles. They did this operation to spare me a wheelchair in the future. I had this done end of Aug. 07, all is fusing well, but I was told this will take at least 1-2 years for recovery, and that is what ever recovery I can regain. The damage might just be done, so there is a chance this is all I will be able to achieve. We shall see. Good luck to you in your recovery. Thanks for listening... Janatee
