Unhappy burning pain between shoulder blades

I have had burning, tingling pain in my middle back between my shoulder blades for 2 years. It has steadily gotten worse. I have had injections, chiropractor treatments, nerve medication,(including cymbalta, lyrica, & neurotin and nothing has helped. I have also had spinal fusion on my cervical spine at C6. I am currently using a Tens Plus machine, which administers electrical stimulation to my back. It so far helps only when the machine is on. As soon as I take it off, the pain is back and sometimes worse. I have had an MRI on my cervical and thoracic spine, which does not show anything. They even did a CT of my chest to rule out Pancoast tumor and it was OK. This pain has literally stolen my life. I feel like a total loser, because my husband wants to get out and do things, and all I want to do is sit in a soft chair, because if I sit still, the pain subsides somewhat. When I get up and move around, the pain starts again. The only thing that helps me is a narcotic called Norco(Hydrocodone) .I take 1 a day (a low dose, at that), just to get me through the worst time, but the doctor refuses to give me a refill, because he says he can't pinpoint the pain. I feel as if the doctors think I am making up this pain, so this is so humiliating. I wish they could feel the pain for 1 day, then they would understand how miserable I am. I would appreciate any input.

Re: burning pain between shoulder blades

this could actually be generated by a few different possibilities.just what was wrong that caused the need for the spinal fusion up there?do you happen to have a copy of your PRE op MRI?was there ANY level of actual cord contact before your fusion was done?if you do have that report(if you don't,you really should obtain ALL of your medical reports and records),could you just post what it stated in the end summary regarding the c 6 area?depending upon what was there BEFORE your fusion could be a reason for what you are feeling now.or,something could have been injured or damaged during that surgery too.knowing what was there preo op would help alot.

just a good suggestion for the pain?have you ever tried lidocaine patches over this area?i have central pain syndrome which is very much like you have described here with the horrid burn/sting that just never stops?using a lido patch over this particular area REALLY helps tons since it helps to numb that area.does this burning pain feel more 'surface type like its just IN your skin or does it feel deeper than that?is there also a hypersensitivity to even light touch there too?if you have not ever tried the lido patches, ask your doc for an RX for some.honestly, these are the ONLY things that help with my burn/sting crap up there and in my arm too.the only downside to the patches is that they can be a bit spendy, espescially if you do not have ins coverage.but if you do,i would most definitely give these a good try.the difference with them vs without them for me is like night and day.

if you could give me that pre op info,it would really help alot.marcia

Re: burning pain between shoulder blades

I too have had fusion at c4,5,6,7 I totally understand about the burning pain between shoulders it hurts so bad. I have had injection in my neck last week but it didn't help I am taking neurontin and zanaflex. That doesn't help either. I have broken screws in my neck at c 7 level and my third surgery a screw is now broke at c 5. I don't know what to do either. I see my neurologist next week on the 30th but he is not been very reassuring. If he can't help me anymore I am going to get a second opinion. I see pain management dr. next month on Feb. 19. I don't want to be hooked on drugs.

Re: burning pain between shoulder blades

Katy have you had an EMG done since your surgery? The reason I ask I have had surgery on C3/4,C4/5,C5/6 and they thought that would heal the burning I had between my shoulder also but it didn't because I had waited too long and I have permanent nerve damage which was found with the EMG. I know how miserable it is and very discouraging since going through the surgery and still have the pain. I hope you can find out something soon and get some relief.

Linda

Re: burning pain between shoulder blades

I went to Dr [neurologist] last wed he now wants me to do therapy I have been through that so many times I don't see where that is going to help with my pain and burning sensations in my neck and arms. My left arm is getting worse and my legs are starting to act up. Getting harder to get moving. I had the leg problem before , I had lower back surgery in 2005 it had gotten better but now it is starting again. I have to do therapy for 6 wks. then have another mri. He said my fusion took this time { only took 3 surgeries and 2 broken screws} so why do i still have all the pain. The neurontin and zanaflex are not doing anything I am using lido. patches but they are my sons he had some left from previous surgery. You are right they help some but after I get off work the pain is so bad I can't stand it. I also believe that my boyfriend an dr think I am making it all up. I would like them to be in my shoes for 24 hrs. just once. I still go see my pain management dr on Feb 15. I don't know what he will do. the injection didn't do anything that he gave me in Jan. I just hope I don't have to live like this the rest of my life.

katy64:
This may sound way, way off, but you may have acid reflux or a hiatal hernia that causes this. After my gallbladder surgery, I woke up with burning so bad at my mid-back at my bra line. They gave me acid reducers. They also found a herniated disk at T 6/7 (mid-back) and a hernia. They must have played football with me during my surgery. I did try lots of acid reducers and the best one that I like is Zantac and Acid Reducer by Costco. They have both at Costco. If you take a Zantac before you eat and feel ok for about 4 hours after---that's what the pain was. Just take this small test. It won't hurt. May make you feel better. If this turns out to be true, go see a gastroenterologist and get an endoscopy. They can see everything through your esophogas, if you have a slow LES, gastritis and they'll test for h. pylori bacteria. They put you to sleep and you awake and won't have any after effects from this procedure. Good luck. Give it a try. De Yone

Re: burning pain between shoulder blades

hey bobbies, can i ask just why you are seeing only a neurologist for this and not the neurosurgeon who did the actual surgeries on you?just an FYI here but it isn't always easy to really tell whether or not any fusion actually took espescially with MRI and having hardware.it just tends to blurr upon MRI.a CT actually would be the best way to show it.

are your symptoms constant or intermittant?what is it that you are feeling exactly?symptoms of a non fusion usually are intermittant(only because that bone plug is moving around and hitting things) and would feel alot like radiculopathy.do you 'hear' anything in your neck area when you move it round?having hardware just makes it much harder to really tell if you have a full fusion or not.it took my other neurosurgeon actually visualizing mine when he had to do a lami on the back of that area to get to my spinal cord for a resection of a cavernoma out of my cord before i knew without a doubt my neck had actually fused 100%.after my very first(the fusion surgery) i still felt alot worse symptoms than i had even before the surgery was done.had an MRI that came up inconclusive and recommended a CT be done.well the CT actually stated i was definitely fused when i knew otherwise just based upon the types of symptoms i was having.i could also 'hear' that bone plug moving and crunching and grinding.had a flexion and extension X ray that finally detemined i was NOT fused at all,go figure.thats when they placed my hardware.eventually i finally did fuse, but it took a pretty long time.

when was the very last type of any real "scan' done of that area?Marcia

Re: burning pain between shoulder blades

The neurologist is the one that did the surgery. I have had xrays and am having more this week. As far as pain it doesn't always hurt so bad mostly as the day goes on the pain gets worse. During the week it is worse because of work, I do a lot of heavy lifting. There are times at work I could just sit and cry but I keep pushing myself to keep going. I Just keep taking pain pills and using the patches. He wants me to have mri after 4 weeks of therapy This is what he wrote on my paper to take to therapy Lumbago and neuritis or radiculitis thoracic or Lumbosacral Unspec. I don't think that it fused it either it has been done 3 times now. First, bone didn't take, second, used bone from my hip but screw broke in c7{ they went threw my throat first 2 times} the last time they went threw the back of my neck and used some experimental stuff instead of bone from my hip again and the screw broke in c5. So my whole neck is pretty much encased in metal with broken screws on both sides. You asked how it feels my neck cracks alot it is crunchy, and lots of pain, but he insists that it is fused. There is also a lot of pain at the base of my neck and down my left arm. Pain is worse than before I had my first surgery. My last xrays say: questionable fracture involving a posterior c5 screw, status post c4-c7 anterior and posterior fusions, unchanged fracture involving an anterior screw at the c7 level, an minimal anterolisthesis of c3 relative to c4 on a degenerative basis. I don't understand all that but maybe you will.

Re: burning pain between shoulder blades

I have not found out what is causing the burning sensation I have to do therapy before he will let me get another mri. The pain is getting worse all the time. I go to the dr. again march 2 hopefully he will schedule one then. The only thing is I have missed therapy because my boyfriend of 9 1/2 years had a heart attack yesterday. He is doing pretty good but I didn't go to therapy yesterday or today and will probably miss thursday. I am suppose to see pain management dr. friday but I am going to have to reschedule that also. I guess I will just have to wait til March to find out what is going on next. The therapist told me I should get second opinion because she never heard of the screws breaking like mine did. If he doesn't do mri I am going to go to my family dr and find another neurologist.

Re: burning pain between shoulder blades

I wish I had the solution for you. But, I also wonder if by now you may have aready found the reason and cure, because an acquaintant of mine is experiencing the same symptoms. And, since she is technophobic and unfamiliar with the Interet, I took it upon myelf to do some search for her online. If by now you have found the reason behind those symptoms and how to cure them, it would be wonderful of you to share theknowledge. Thanks very much. Wishing you the best. ~ Ray

Re: burning pain between shoulder blades

No I really have not found anything out yet I went to the doctors last wednesday and he ordered another mri If I get no results after this mri I am definitely getting a new doctor {neurologist] I have already talked to my family doctor about this. He wants to put me on lyrica and fentanyl patches but they are very addictive. I haven't filled the prescriptions yet. The pain and burning sensation is just getting worse. He just does not want to address the problem. He pretty much acts like I am making it all up. I am so tired of hurting. If I find out anymore after tests I will post it Thanks for asking, Bobbie

Re: burning pain between shoulder blades

You may want to have your doctor refer you to a Pain Management specialist and see what they can offer. I have had both cervical and lumbar fusions and 2 years after my cervical fusion, I started to have shoulder and neck pain and migraine headdaches again. My pain management doctor did a treatment called prolotherapy and it took about 90% of the pain away. Good Luck and hope you get relief soon. Dee

PS I have a couple of posts on here about prolotherapy that are more informative if you want to you could look those up.
