Almost 14 Months Post Op Update

Boy has then been a year. This is a very long slow process. I had a 2 level acdf 11/30/06. Spent most of 2007 in spasms and knots with intense pain. Still have a burning itch that comes and goes in my neck and shoulder. Was in physical therapy until July. Blamed alot of the pain, spasms and knots in my shoulder on the bone stimulator as it sat right on top of the muscle on top of my shoulder (was the necklace type bone stimulator). I still will have the stabbing pain in my neck if I overdo or get tense. The pain has slowly subsided and I can usually get it to settle down pretty quickly. The side of my neck where the surgery was performed feels weird (knotty swollen). The neurosurgeon finally discharged me a couple of weeks ago as they feel there is not much they can do. The CT scan and xrays post op showed fusion and I don't have the symptoms I had presurgery. If I lay on my back I still get the firing up in my head and ears that I did when I first had the surgery. I know this sounds discouraging but believe me I am not in the pain I was presurgery. If I could get frequent massages on my mid to upper back I think my symptoms would be minimal (and keep up with the exercises the physical therapist taught me). Anyway contemplating this surgery need to accept that it takes at least 1 to 1.5 years to get over this surgery and recovery. Some symptoms will never go away, but they will minimize your presurgery pain.

Side note. I was taking alot of Tylenol (8 hour) and also St. John's Wort to help the nerve firing. Went to regular doc and discovered by blood pressure was high. After researching discovered both Tylenol and St. John's Wort elevate your blood pressure so I stopped taking them immediately. Only take Tylenol now and again.

Re: Almost 14 Months Post Op Update

Hello Milindafm.... Boy you are the first person on this board that has mentioned the long recovery time. I had a 4 level ACDF and corpectomy Aug. 30/07. I did everything I was told to do, and I wore my hard Aspen collar for 8 weeks, 5 days, 6 hours. lol lol The surgery took away my gait, in my left leg, but I still have heaviness, and numbness. Walking with a cane, and I just hurt when I do anything. Last visit with my surgeon 2 weeks ago, sat me down, and told me "The body heals itself in its own time." He said I was looking at 1-2 years at best. But, If the damage is done, then I will have to live with it the best I know how. But I have had some progress, so this will be one long recovery. My cervical problems did not effect my arms or neck or hands, mine had to be different and effect my legs. This operation was to prevent me from ending up in a wheelchair. There are times I cry, because I can not do what I use to, and I'm just too young to sit. BUT... I thank the good Lord I can walk at all. So I pick myself up and go on. I get a lot of info from this board and all who talk to me, and me to them... I guess we just have to keep going... Hope you get better each day. Hang in there! Janatee

Re: Almost 14 Months Post Op Update

Janatee, keep your chin up. It sounds like you have already made some progress as slow as that progress is. I just wish the docs would be a little honest sometimes about what our expectations should be and what reality is. My mother has uterine cancer (stage iii) and sometimes I could shake the doctors when they say this or that symptom will pass (from the treatments) in a few days knowing full well it may be a year or more.

A smile everyday will make the world brighter no matter how painful the rest of these old bodies are feeling....

Melindafm....Thanks for your words of wisdom. It sure helps to know there are others out there with the same problems.... I find a lot of comfort in these boards. I will keep my chin up, and take each day as it comes. I try to get down into my inner soul, and project some healing from within...I know good thoughts can help to heal you faster. You keep healing, and I sure hope things will work out with your Mom. God Bless... Janatee
