profound muscle loss in leg - Spinal Cord Disorders Message Board

My boyfriend has had a profound loss of muscle in his leg... in the last year...his calf is about half the size of his other one... I wanted to know what this came from.. what it could be? I know he is supposed to be goin to a spinal doctor very soon... i was looking online for answers .. but im not sure where to look.

Hi aries, I'm not sure this will be of any help, but I had muscle loss in my arm. It wasn't profound like your boyfirend's, wasn't even visible (at least, I don't think it is), but it came up on tests my neurosurgeon did and was due to my cervical stenosis/flattened spinal cord. I knew both arms were 'weak', but did not know I had muscle loss in one of them until tested. I had surgery in April on my neck, but it wasn't to restore the functions I lost -it was to halt any further losses. I don't know yet if I have or will regain my muscle loss or if the weakness I had in both arms is gone. I'm still not allowed to lift much (had a second surgery, on my back, in May), so I haven't really tested it out yet.

My husband (46 yrs. old) has lost 2 1/2 inches in one calf and is losing the hair on the leg too! He was diagnosed with a tethered spinal cord. He is also losing the mobility in the ankle too. The neurosurgeon told him that the surgery is very dangerous and that only 1/3 of people who have had the surgery get relief from the pain. Complicatons can include paralysis of the legs and lower body. He suggested that we just go home and wait until bladder and bowel functions are affected. Come back in 6 months for pain management, since we are surgeons and don't prescribe meds! What a crock! I would appreciate any comments if someone is going thru the same things!
