Bone spec. scan, EMG. I'm clueless

Hi all:

Well my wife is making me see doctors again. I saw a surgeon today and he took x-rays/looked at my MRI's. He said my c5-c6 is almost bone on bone. He scheduled me for a "bone spec. scan" and an EMG. I get something injected and 2 hours later go back for the scan. EMG is next week.

Can anybody tell me what to expect (sammy, marcia help!). Whats up with the injection, will I glow in the dark or something? I'm clueless.

Take care, Matt

Re: Bone spec. scan, EMG. I'm clueless

No Matt, you won't glow in the dark. They inject medical grade nuclear material and over the 2 hour wait it settles into inflamed areas of the bone and then you lay still on a table while the machine measures the concentrations of material in your bones/spine. Painless except for the shot.

The EMG is another question. That can hurt in some areas depending on what they are testing and how deep they need to go. But it's a much easier test now than what it was 30 years ago...I can attest to that! But it will tell you if the problems you are having are directly associated with your spine or impingement elsewhere. They use electrodes in some areas and test how fast a signal travels from one point to another. In some areas, to reach the nerve they use a very fine needle to get to the area they need to test. Other than that, it's just annoying, like hitting your funny bone. A fast zap and it's over. I found the bandaids they placed all over the place far more painful when they had to pulled off than the test itself. So think of it as less painful than pulling off a bandaid.

Good luck Matt....................Jenny

Re: Bone spec. scan, EMG. I'm clueless

Give your wife a big hug for me, I am glad she made you do this. You will not glow from the test, just in case you do let me know right away, lol.
I had the EMG & some people fiind them pretty uncomfortable & I was prepared for the worst, it was not to bad at all. I had injections far worse so dont get to worked up over that. You will do what you have to here. I am the big chicken here so if I did it all so can you, ask Marica she'll tell you what I wimp I was through all this.
Bone on bone huh, well my friend I am wondering what else they will find. No wonder your in pain, I was much the same there, nothing much left when the surgeon got in there. You will be relieved to know whats going on in there & then you'll want to go back & tell the doctor who blew this off where to go,at least thats how I felt, lol.
I am thrilled you are getting somewhere here. Are you able to get some thing for your pain now that they know something is definantly up in there? Keep us informed here, as we will want to know how your doing & definantly let us know if you glow from the nuclear injection, lol. God bless Sam
