Not sure what to think..black lines in spine canal

I had a cervical MRI today. It shows a herniated disc at C5-6 and possibly at C3-4. I also noticed that there are black lines in the white area running laterally by the spinal cord. What could this mean? I tried looking up info on black lines in the spinal fluid, black lines in the spinal canal, and black lines in or by the thecal sac but came up empty handed. My symptoms are dizziness, headaches, pain in my neck, pain in my shoulder, pain and tingling in my arm and thumb. I also had a brain MRI which showed normal. I tried also looking up to see if the lines are part of the nucleus pulposis. My appointment with the neurosurgeon isn't for another week...I'm not sure if I can wait a week to find out. Any help of where to look or anybody with this same thing would be a great help to ease my mind.

regarding black lines. My MRI shows black also and my doctor said that is where there is no spinal fluid due to compression. I had a herniated disc in Fed/09 and was later diagnosed with spinal stenosis I am seeing a nero surg and still havent deceided if I will have surgery

Really? That is kinda scary!! The numbness in my arm is getting worse and I wondered what it might be. I have a herniated disc at C5-6 and the black line curves along with the herniation. I have a few more days until I see a neurosurgeon. Really curious as to what he will say. Thanks for the input.

black lines usually are the ligament that runs along the spinal cord....a bulging disc will push the black line outward. The disc can herniate out of its normal position but not break the ligament itself.

It is scary. I was told that the whit area around the cord was spinal fluid and then where you see black it was compression so there wasn't fluid in that area. I had numbing shooting pains and spasms the pain in my arm and shoulder blade were the worst I ever felt in my life but i had 3 epidural and I haven't had pain since April But I am sure it will eventually return

Try doing a google image search for cervical MRI for comparison.

I am not expert but I do know reading MRI images is not a simple process. Out of all the images they take, the ones that a patient might actually be able to understand are only 1 or 2 sets of the series. Are you reading T2 weighted images? It could even be MRI artifacts which are motion, ghosting or left over as the scan moves to the next series.

On the slice images you will see white ring around the cord and that is fluid. In compression you won't see the white ring or you might see a disturbed ring. But in that series you can't look at all the images either.

Good luck at the doctor.
