Donor Bone Compression

I am 14 weeks post-op on a c6-7 fusion with a donor bone. I have been having more discomfort and numbness/tingling lately. Today, I went in for a post op visit and x-ray. The x-ray shows that the donor bone has compressed. The doctor says that he has never seen donor bone compress this much. The bones are fusing but the compression worries me. I am going back in 6 weeks for more x-rays and another visit.

Has anything like this happened to anyone else? If so, what was the final outcome?

Thanks
Rob

Re: Donor Bone Compression

Hi - did you have internal fixation with your surgery? Is there a plate? I do find it kind of odd about "compression". I could believe to hear maybe it shifted but to hear the word compression sounds odd if you have a plate and screws.

Re: Donor Bone Compression

I have a plate and screws. You can see that the angle of the screws has changed with the compression. Originally, the screws were not parallel. If I were guessing, I would say that one was going away from the other at 10 to 15 degrees. Now they appear to be parallel. Seeing the bone compressed this much worries me as well.

Re: Donor Bone Compression

In the last week, my pain has gone from a 3-4 on no pain meds to a 4-5 taking 3 or 4 vicodine a day. My MD wants to wait another month and hope this is just temporary pain. Does anyone else have any thoughts on why a donor bone would compress like this?
